UK coal mines and women.

I know there was the 1842 (?) act that forbade women and children going down pits. When I was young I really wanted a certain job that involved going underground and was told it wasn't open to me.

Would this have been true? Were women allowed down coal mines again in UK? If so, when?

I've tried Google, there's lots about the original act but nothing about it being revoked, so maybe it wasn't?
