You will then with water and put them into pot plants so the water slowly releases into them so you don’t need to water them as often.

It's one of teose watering thingies isn't it. The ones that you fill with water and then stick in a plantpot.

Can tell I'm not into gardening

It goes the other way up, you stick the spike in the ground near a plants roots and fill the ball with water, then it self waters in summer or if you go away.

Never fails to impress me how good (and fast!) MNers are at this....

looks like its stalk is broken so it wont work as well quite common for this to happen plastic bottles work as well but not as pretty (on bottle block a bit with tissue paper & bury the end in damp soil
(been out in the garden planting seeds -for feeding the wildlife especially snails no doubt - aha - I can order beer you little blighters)
