Has anyone ever had diarrhoea for 5 days or more? Starting to worry

DS and DH have had a stomach bug, diarrhoea lasting 3 days. I’m on day 5 and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. It’s the consistency of water. I’m drinking plenty and eating what I can but I’m exhausted. Normal? Should I phone gp for advice? I just want it to stop!

Yes phone gp - is your stomach painful?

Deathraystare · 24/03/2020 12:46

I had it for a couple of days - not all the time and just a 'one-off' but two odd days. I am fine now.

Yes,many times.

Take rehydration sachets and keep up with fluids. Definitely wouldn't be worried if you are eating ok.

Just wait for it to pass. Feel better soon.

Yes, if I have stomach issues they tend to go on for at least 5-7 days. I am on day 6 of it now. I think I just have quite a sensitive stomach.

Yes, turned out to be bacterial not viral (I have a suppressed immune system) and the Dr gave me antibiotics which stopped it almost instantaneously. It felt semi-miraculous.

Ok thanks everyone. I’m not going loads through the day. It’s morning, mid day and evening really but when I go it’s just water. No pain, no cramping (apart from on the first day). I feel ok but exhausted from it.

Just wanted to hear that it’s still ‘normal’. I’ve never had it for this long before. Usual 2-3 days.

Remember that stress and anxiety can cause / exacerbate diarrhoea as well. Take care of yourself, you poor thing.

If you've any yoghurt in the house (ideally low fat / fat free), try some of that, ideally over a couple of days. Even better, some of those probiotic capsule things. Sometimes after a nasty bout, you can lose some intestinal flora and that can cause diarrhoea in itself.

My mum had it around the end of Jan, horrendously bad for about 6 days. And her neighbour has it now.

Only when I came back from a holiday in the Dominican Republic. I felt fine buy had diarrhoea for about 8 days.

Yeah I had campylobacter a few years and had diarrhoea for about 9 days, felt horrid with it too!

Circletime27 · 25/03/2020 07:21

For those who have had it several days, did you get any treatment for it (antibiotics) or did you just wait for it to run it’s course?

I desperately don’t want to bother the gp with it. NHS website says 5-7 days is normal so I’ll wait until I’ve had it a week.

I had a bout last recently. Lasted about a week.

MuseumOfYou · 25/03/2020 08:09

Ran its course, so to speak.
