Any dentists? Or ear people? Or doctors?

Yes yes I know no one here can actually diagnose my but I can’t get to the dentist and unsurprisingly the doctors are a tad busy

I have a pain that is across my lower left side jaw, down my neck (kind of in my throat) and up towards my eye and ear.

The back 4 or 5 teeth are sore but the pain is mainly my jaw and flits between my neck and ear. It’s been 2 or 3 days but I have been off the last 2w with suspected Corona - I occasionally get something like this when I have a sinus infection but I don’t think I do right now and I have had this before with an ear infection but I have no other symptoms of that

Google has told me this is referred pain from a heart attack which is immensely reassuring Hmm

Does this sound like I need to track down a dentist I can see or should I assume it’s more ear related...or should I be seeing a cardiologist if google is to be believed

What happens if you take pain relief? Does it help?l

Sounds crap for you Flowers

Ibuprofen helps until it’s time for the next dose iyswim...I only had one left in the pack and I took that an hour ago and it’s still there (but not as bad as without) but it generally goes with the full dose

Given what is going on at the moment is there any chance you might be a little stressed?Wink

I get TMJD (Tempero mandibular joint disorder) when very stressed. I clench my jaw in the day and grind my teeth at night. I also have a phobia of the dentist and so when the fear creeps in that I have something wrong with a tooth the jaw clenching and teeth grinding increases and it is a vicious circle.

Can you try setting an alarm on your phone to remind you to relax your jaw about every 20 minutes? I have a mouth guard at night (which might me more of a logistical challenge to obtain at the moment). Also try to avoid leaning your chin on your hands on that side - if you are right handed this My explain why it is on your left side, particularly if you’re working from home and staring at a computer screen in your kitchen/other unusual location without proper office chair.

There are also exercises you can do, and I found massaging the joint (start in front of your ear and massage in little circles with your fingertips down across the joint towards your chin.

Obviously it might be something else, but give this a try. Particularly if you find you are getting spots along your jawline as apparently that indicates you may be doing this.

I had that and it was a root canal job in one of the teeth but also TMJ - the pain is still ongoing from the TMJ but the root canal has sorted out the other tooth thank goodness.

Does your GP have an online consultation or contact service?I think it's worth describing those symptoms in case you need a course of antibiotics for a possible infection to be on the safe side, given the circs.

A tooth access can cause havoc.

Or it could something else. I'm not a doctor of anything useful btw. But personally I'd want to treat / rule out a treatable infection at this point in time.

I’ve had the exact same pain for the past few days. I’ve also been off work with a nasty bug (no idea if Covid 19 or not though) and assumed it was my sinuses. I’ve found Beconase nasal spray has really helped. I didn’t think it would because it was my teeth/jaw, not my nose, but it did.

ValleyoftheHorses · 23/03/2020 17:30

Dentists are all closed except for emergencies:
Swelling closing eye or large lower
Severe trauma
Bleeding- not gums so post extraction only
Severe pain that keeps you awake all night and is not relieved by painkillers.
There are reports of sinus/ wisdom tooth type pain from Covid 19.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 23/03/2020 18:37

Thank you so much. I’m feeling shockingly sorry for myself!

The pain in my jaw and throat is constant whereas the pain in my face and ear is far less so so I’m thinking it’s tooth related.

My dentist is shut except for the above mentioned emergencies. What do I do?!

My FIL has this at the moment and it's shingles! Any red marks/rash?

baffledbat · 23/03/2020 19:22

I've had the root canal work done and I've still got the pain in my face and ear...and now my sinuses too.

postitnot · 23/03/2020 20:16

You can take 400mg - 600mg ibuprofen every 4 hours, hopefully that will settle it down.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 23/03/2020 20:16

No, no red marks or rash

Ibuprofen isn’t even touching it tonight Sad

Tip your head back and use your thumb and index finger to bracket your windpipe midway down your neck. Slide your fingers back a couple of cm and you'll feel a tight muscle a few cm above your collarbone. Massage it hard. It'll hurt but when it starts to ease just follow it up to where it joins your skull. I get the same thing with stress. Feels like toothache, ear ache and a tension headache all a once. It'll go as quickly as it came, ibuprofen and muscle rub gel helps, so does heat if you can fill a hot water bottle?

Dollygirl2008 · 24/03/2020 21:22

OMG I could have written this post so am following with interest

I had a root canal done 6 weeks ago and it's been fine since. But for the last week, I have pain all through my jaw, under my eyes, ears, jawbone. I can't decide if I'm subconsciously clenching my jaws through anxiety which is making my teeth sore, or if the root canal is playing up and making all the teeth in my mouth sensitive, and jaw sore. I can also "taste" the filling if that makes sense

Do you plan on going to the emergency dentist? I've got some jaw exercises to see if that helps, but I guess if it's the tooth, then they won't......

How are you feeling now?

ValleyoftheHorses · 25/03/2020 17:53

You can’t go to an emergency dentist. We are all closed except for antibiotics and advice.
Soon there will be specialist centres for urgent dental treatment. Urgencies listed above.
