Metallic, chemically almost urine like smell in my house that’s driving me mad

What on earth could it be?! I clean constantly but with small children you know how it is, it’s driving me mad I cannot find out what it could be. It’s a very chemically smell, I get waves of it very strongly- mainly in the kitchen but in the living room sometimes aswell. Anyone have any clue? I threw out my daffodils last week as I thought it was then but I’ve just noticed it again today.

Is it coming through the plug hole or waste disposal? We used to have a rotten egg smell.

Shookethtothecore · 11/03/2020 09:08

Possibly I didn’t think of that- I’ll try that. Thank you

Random one but might you be pregnant...? I remember that metallic smell so well from early pregnancy with both my DCs and getting whiffs of it at random times and places.

Greedycushionhoarder2 · 11/03/2020 10:22

2 thoughts, have you had any problems with vermin, my mum had rats in her kitchen and after pest control had been there was the same sort of smell and it was a dead rat decomposing.
The other thought is my son's bedroom has this sort of smell and very shortly after he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and had keto acidosis and he was sweating and breathing out ketones which were being absorbed by his being etc, we could smell it on him as well though I'd at least I could, not everyone can smell ketones

Is this is a constant year-round problem?

I've had a smell in my house previously that I would describe in a very similar way. I thought it was cat urine at one point (we don't have a cat...).

It seems to start at this time of year and then subsides in the winter.

I'm starting to suspect the shoots of the wild bluebells outside my front door as the smell is confined to the hallway.

If you have a large plant like this. the flowers can smell like cat pee

Was just about to suggest it could be a house plant.

TreacherousPissFlap · 11/03/2020 11:40

We've had daffodils recently that I had to bin as they smelt like wee. Even DH could smell them which gives some kind of indication how awful the smell was Envy

whoknows2017 · 11/03/2020 12:51

...could it be damp trainers ??

I know that a little while back I blamed the cat for peeing in the house - turns out that the lining in some of my son's trainers were reacting to sweat and giving off an wee-flavoured odour...

RainySaturday · 11/03/2020 13:47

I'd say you may be pregnant

Roomba · 11/03/2020 14:08

When I had a similar sounding smell, it turned out to be a potato that had rolled under a cupboard. It was faint for ages and I thought I was going mad until it got much stronger and everyone else could smell it too!

Shookethtothecore · 11/03/2020 14:58

Thank you everyone- I have lots to go on here. Absolutely not pregnant tho, many other people can smell it aswell.

Are your pipes metal? They can corrode and give off a chemical/urine smell.

Lllot5 · 11/03/2020 15:14

Sweaty trainers, sweaty shin pads ( that is the worse smell in the world )
Dead varmint somewhere, houseplant, pregnant. Or even blood somewhere.

Thistles24 · 11/03/2020 15:21

Oh yes, the smell of non leather sports shoes when they’re damp is VILE!!!! That’s a cat pee smell though. We had an issue with a chemical smell, it was our bath that hadn’t been draining properly, water was staying in the u bend and causing an awful smell.

RandomWok · 11/03/2020 15:22

I had this, this morning. Was my daffodils as @TreacherousPissFlap said.

RandomWok · 11/03/2020 15:25

Sorry just re-read and you have thrown them out. My lecture had a funny smell in her kitchen. Wasn't until she dropped a heavy pan and broke a tile that water came creeping out. Her upstairs loo soil pipe was cracked and had been seeping into her wall and down under her tiles. Her soil pipe had been concealed in a wall.

Tableclothing · 11/03/2020 15:26

Could it be your cleaning products? Viakal has a horrible metallic smell, imo.

Shookethtothecore · 11/03/2020 17:53

It’s my wet shoes!! It’s after I had been on the school runs all they were damp. Hense it coming and going. Well I never! I had no idea they could smell like that! Thanks vipers- excellent advice as ever

I got caught in a torrential rainstorm one summer. Came home and there was a kitten stuck in the cupboards /the wall/ SOMEWHERE. Drove me absolutely mental trying to find it, getting stressed because it was obviously very frightened.

'Twas my sandals. Rain had caught inside somehow, hence serious squeeking/mewing. Explained why the
'kitten' was stuck all over my house as I frantically tried to find the poor thing.
