Looking for a phone for my son's 14th birthday, something high spec with a good camera. Has to be quite large, ie 6" * 2.7".
That's the size of a Samsung galaxy s9 which is what I'm thinking of.
The iPhone 8 plus is an option.
Any other suggestions?

Try mobile phones direct . They have some bargain deals on contract phones

Try refurbished phones on eBay that comes with 12 month guarantee. We bought DD aged 12 an iPhone 7 for £180 on eBay at Xmas. For slightly more if your budget is bigger you could get the 8 as well.
I was reluctant to buy of Facebook market place or similar only due to the year before she had my old 6s because I upgraded but kept it for her until she was old enough. 2 months into it the sim part of the phone didn’t work. Apple couldn’t fix it but also couldn’t replace as it was outside the 12 months. The phone technically was new as they replaced my phone but I upgraded and kept it in a drawer for 12 months. She used it for 2 months and they couldn’t help. We then tried the high street stores but they tried and set it wasn’t fixable. My DD was great and kept the phone for 12 months using wifi only but could never call us when she needed to. So now we are happy that if her new phone goes faulty we have a bit of guarantee on it.

My 16 year old is quite techy and saved up for a Xiaomi Pocophone F1 he didn't want Samsung or Iphone and it seems to be a really good phone - very fast, good spec and price.

Thanks all. I will buy it off eBay as that's what I've done previously.
I was mainly looking for suggestions on specific models with a good spec and a good camera.
That's an interesting suggestion Redda which I'll look into.
He had (and I have) a Xiaomi mi A1 which are great phones for the price they cost. The only weak point is the camera especially indoors in low light.
