I found out I had the Brca1 gene is 2017, which means I have a 85% risk of breast cancer and a high risk of ovarian cancer. I am booked in to have a double mastectomy and implant reconstruction on 6th July. I’ve finished having children and breastfeeding but I’m terrified as I’ve never had an operation before. I’m planning on having implants, as I I’m slim so don’t have much excess flesh and I’ve been reading about breast implant illness which is scaring me, so I would love to hear positive stories, either from people who have had implant reconstruction following mastectomy of those who have had cosmetic implants and no problems.

I can’t speak personally but one of my closest friends had this done. She’d just had her second DC and she’d lost her mum and aunt from breast
Cancer many years before.

She wa absolutely fine: long surgery time but she had a lot of tissue right round under her back. She had implants immediately (smaller than her size before but she was quite booby) and then went back later and had nipples ‘made’ and tattooed. She’s shown me everything during the process and I’ve been amazed at how good she looks. Plus we had an good few laughs ‘Selecting’ her tattoos and colours (heart shaped were options!!)

She’s also about to embark on some subsequent amazing tattoo work on her back where her scars run, I’ll try to get you the name of the studio, was really beautiful.

No problems since and the start was at least 10 years ago.

No personal experience but my mum had implants after a mastectomy and they look great!

I’ve just had a double nipple soaring mastectomy. I went private - so v expensive £24k - but only have scars around top of nipple, not the usual anchor shape. Absolutely incredible surgeon. Discomfort and taking it easy but minimal pain. Went for 8k walk 5 days later and it was fine
