Can social services refuse to do a Carers Assessment?

At breaking point.
Have had to contact SS (been advised to by various bodies for some time) and spoke with child disability team worker today. Autistic teenage DC is abusive and violent towards me (and to a lesser extent DH) and verbally abusive to her younger sibling, occasional hitting too. Has been like this for some time, but I keep thinking there would be improvement any time as new medication took hold but it’s not happening.

Was told it Carers Assessment wasn’t worth it because it took a while to complete and be assessed (around 42 days) by which time my DC may be better (with new medication) and in any case all they could do would be offer respite care by how can that work if DC is refusing to leave the house?

I clearly said I can’t cope, but only advice is to call police.

Are they obliged to give an assessment? I wanted to be sure before I pushed the issue.

Many thanks.

Ime they will avoid where possible. I too have a physically and verbally abusive autistic child and we were told we didn't reach the threshold for a social services assessment. We were told to contact a local autism charity (as an assessment outcome) but they do not offer any services.

I currently have a soft touch complaint in with both CAMHS and the LA, I will consider taking it further if needs be.

Sorry that you are having a hard time too, but ultimately the services don't care.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, too @TheGreatWave , thanks for responding.

It’s appalling that being assaulted in your own home is now deemed quite acceptable. I’m not sure about a complaint just yet... was hoping I could just press the assessment issue.
Yes, CAMHS were equally useless for us, too...told us to call SS. 😞
