Stupid Q: upright vacuum cleaners and stairs

Ok, so I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. I've been reading about recommendations for vacuums that are good with pet hair and they are, in general, all uprights.
I've only ever used cylinder vacuum cleaners, which sit on the stairs while you use the cleaning head to clean.
How do you clean the stairs with an upright? Do you need to lift the whole thing onto every step and push it back and forth?

They usually have a pipe attachment that reaches to a few steps. You still have to balance the vacuum half way up the stairs to do the middle section.

So you just disconnect the pipe, put on a small cleaning head, and go for it?
That sounds much better than I was fearing. Might be time to buy a diffeent type of vacuum!! Oh, the excitement!!!

Yes, check before you buy though! There are teeny lightweight rechargeable ones which don't. Most have a ridged tube somewhere about them, and a small head. The length varies.

DH is a bargain hunter, and also likes to be prepared for anything. Ive never chosen a vacuum, as he's always got a back up that he's bought in the sales, just in case.

Cool. Thank you @picklemewalnuts.
I'm not going teeny tiny rechargeable. I need some power behind it with 2 kids and 2 cats!

Do. Not. Get an upright Dyson ball. They are a pita! I hate mine with a passion. Constantly falls over even if I'm not doing the stairs. Bloody thing

( have I made my point??) Sad

Dyson Cordless Animal is great for hoovering stairs, no need to lug a massive heavy thing around. ( I have 2 huge hairy dogs and 2 long haired cats)

KittenVsBox · 03/03/2020 12:22

Dyson not on the list. That's our current one, and I'm going for something different.
Miele cylinder and Shark uprights seem to be topping the charts.

The shark liftaway is what I have and it's brilliant for stairs. The canister bit unclips from the upright bit and then you only have to carry that up the stairs while doing them. It's great for using the liftaway bit for reaching up to do cobwebs on the ceiling too Grin

I also came on to recommend the shark lift away, perfect for stairs.

My neighbour gave me a black and decker 2 in 1, it is the best and easiest vacuum I've ever had!!
