How do you know if you have gallstones?

Hello!

I keep getting pain under my left boob after eating. I think it might be gallstones but it's relatively mild pain (so far!) Anyone else experienced similar?

You could go for blood tests - but if you have gallstones and they are passing it's not mild pain - it's absolute agony.

Pain is usually under ribs on right side.

I've not had them myself, but I think an ultrasound can confirm them. I thought it was right shoulder pain often though? Generally you are higher risk if you fit the 5 F's, but others can get them too. (my size 6 cousin had hers removed age 30).

Under your left boob is your stomach. Gall bladder is on the right!
Have you noticed a difference with different types of foods?
Have you taken any medication recently?

MrsT1405 · 01/03/2020 20:41

Gallstones are agony! More likely ulcers. See a gp.

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 01/03/2020 20:42

Left side is the pancreas and you can get pancreatitis induced due to gallstones that travel along and block the pancreatic duct. (Bit of a stretch from just a mild pain though.)

Do you have a reason to suspect you may have gallstones? Are you fitting the risk factors /is there family history?

couchlover · 01/03/2020 20:43

I had gall stones and the pain is excruciating- worse than labour. Mine felt like a massive rubber ring of pain all around my upper abdomen sort of just under my ribs.

First attack came on an evening and pain lasted 4/5 hours. After that I had probably 1 attack ever 3/4 weeks until a stone got stuck and I had permanent pain until my gall bladder was removed two weeks later,

IlikebigMutts · 01/03/2020 20:47

On left side it is more likely to be stomach related possibly stomach acid or other stomach problem, but you need to get it checked. I had gallstones as others have said it's your right side. Pain I had was sharp after eating fatty foods.

MotherPupper · 01/03/2020 20:47

I've lost a lot of weight, really quickly and am fat, female and fertile! Hmmm... think I'll give the gp a ring. I have had billary colic before and it was absolute agony, but as this is every time I eat, I thought it might be a mild case.

Trust me, you would know! Agonising pain on your right hand side going round to your back.

MrsBungle · 01/03/2020 20:52

My gallstone pain didn’t start off as agony, for a few months I thought I had heart burn, all my pain was right in the middle rather to the left. It felt like my bra strap was bring tightened. It did become excruciating and I ended up with pancreatitis.

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/03/2020 20:54

Gallstone pain is right sided along the shoulder blade and it hurts badly. If you are overweight, losing weight, and having left side pain it’s probably your spleen, bowel, pancreas or ovary. Suggest you go to your GP asap

MazDazzle · 01/03/2020 20:57

It would be sore under your ribs on the right side.

I was rolling on the floor in agony in the middle of the night and had to shout for help. It was on a par with labour contractions. Also had d&v.

Juicyfrooty · 01/03/2020 21:05

I had gallstones removed about 4 years ago, I never had severe pain with them I used to get a tight kind of feeling in the area right under both boobs where the bra sits, it would make me feel breathless and uncomfortable. The pain was worse after eating things like pastry and fried foods.

When I went for an ultrasound the lady doing the scan was sure it wasn't going to be gallstones because I was early 30's and not overweight but there were quite a few in there.

Chocolateandchats · 01/03/2020 21:11

I had loads of gallstones and the pain was really sharp under my left boob and lasted for about an hour, I’d literally be doubled over in pain crying. I’d also look 7 months pregnant and I was a size 10 at the time. I was 30 years old. I didn’t fit any of the risk groups besides being female and fertile.
But since you say the pain is mild I wouldn’t think it’s gallstones. Mine never got worst, it was awful from the start until I had them removed.
