This black item was surgically removed from my poor dog's stomach on Thursday 😳 but we have no idea what it is! (The lighter is just to show the scale/size). It's roughly the size and shape of a doorstop but it's not rubber. It's sponge but it's not a squishy sponge, it's pretty solid. When you squeeze it hard it barely dents but it does give. There are no holes or anything in it. It's perfectly symmetrical, not bigger at one end or anything. There are no teeth marks in it, it shows no sign of damage at all.

We're all at a complete loss! The doggo in question is not an eater of anything he shouldn't which makes the whole thing even stranger. He's literally never in his 8.5 years eaten anything he shouldn't; not even a chewed shoe or slipper.

Guesses so far have included:
Door stop - doubt it as there are no holes in it and it's sponge (albeit pretty solid sponge)
End of a walking stick - too wide I think and surely they would be rubber or they'd soak up rain etc?
Piece of a toy - can't think what though? It's too perfectly shaped.

Over to you Mumsnet!

No idea, thought it might be the end of a walking stick, but can see you've already ruled that out...so place marking!

Cuddling57 · 29/02/2020 23:16

No idea but how did he not choke on that?!
Could have picked it up whilst out on a walk?

BlueHarry · 29/02/2020 23:17

Some kind of speaker/audio equipment?

Ear plug for a dragon.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/02/2020 23:17

Could it be the foot off a piece of furniture?

Muddlewitch · 29/02/2020 23:18

Is from the bottom of a chair or table leg or similar? The things to stop them scratching the floor?

cultkid · 29/02/2020 23:18

Lid from a bottle of foundation ?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/02/2020 23:19

Or a piece of cushioning foam for transporting something. Like in a washing machine?

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 29/02/2020 23:19

I was going to suggest a Bluetooth speaker, but that would have plug ins for charge.

Errrm what about a white or blackboard eraser?

BuddhaAtSea · 29/02/2020 23:21

It looks like a rubber foot from a heavy appliance/electronic equipment.
Maybe he was just playing with it like with a ball and he swallowed it.

Thisismytimetoshine · 29/02/2020 23:23

Is it from the bottom of a walking stick or cane?

Gibbus · 29/02/2020 23:23

It could be something from some packaging? Hope DDog is okay now

NormaLouiseBates · 29/02/2020 23:28

@Cuddling57 we have no idea! The vet did say that it could have been in his stomach for some time; weeks or even months, and not caused any issues until it started to move whereby it then blocked the top of his small intestine.

The culprit in question! Currently on his 2nd overnight stay at the pet hospital due to complications but he seems to be over the worst now after a couple of very scary days. He wanted me to show off his ice cream bandage as he thinks it looks very fetching on him 💙

Appliance packaging is an interesting theory. Both our washing machine and dishwasher are 3/4 years old though 😯

He's over the worst now but it was touch and go at one point. It's been a hell of a few days.

I'll spare you the photo of his battle scar... unless anyone wants to see it?!

Thisismytimetoshine · 29/02/2020 23:32

Oh, he’s lovely! Glad he survived the experience!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/02/2020 23:32

Aww poor wee guy. Tell him his bandage is v cool. (Pun intended) ask him if it’s flavoured? Grin

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 29/02/2020 23:32

That's some awesome bandaging!!!
He's so cute 😍 hope he's back home soon.

PickAChew · 29/02/2020 23:33

I'm happy with the photo of him. He's adorable. Probably even more when he's not feeling like shit.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/02/2020 23:33

He could’ve picked it up out on a walk or anywhere OP. People drop all sorts of shit outside.

SpoonBlender · 29/02/2020 23:36

It looks a lot like a bass port plug for a largish hifi speaker, but they're usually softer sponge than how you describe it.

Glad it came out! Bless ddogs and their awful habit of eating anything that's not nailed down :)

RoomR0613 · 29/02/2020 23:40

It's packaging. I can't remember what ours was from but we had something of a similar material and shape over Christmas. Possibly to keep glass/ something breakable wedged in place during delivery.

Dizzygirl00 · 29/02/2020 23:49

Oh he’s so cute 🐶 hope he feels better soon x

justforthisnow · 29/02/2020 23:54

He ate the packaging from 4 years ago.
Case closed 😂.
What a lovely doggo though!

I am old enough to have read this when it was first published and it is a testament to the writer that I still post it.

Oh the poor boy. Glad he’s on the road to recovery. I love those vet bandages. My cat once came home with a bandage with mice and cheese on. 😂🧀🐭
