Museums or galleries in London with African tribe exhibits

My dd is doing African tribes for her gcse artwork and im trying to find a museum or art gallery we can visit with exhibits/photographs/painting. Anything along those lines really in the London area or close by. Google isn't bringing much up apart from an African art gallery which has closed down. If anyone has seen anything recently along these lines I'd appreciate a heads up! Thank you Smile

Horniman Museum in Forest Hill. They have an "African Worlds" gallery and a music gallery with some African instruments displayed. Nothing very specific on tribes per se, but if an item comes from a particular tribe it's usually highlighted nearby.

It’s been a while so i can’t swear to it, but doesn’t SOAS have a gallery/small museum exhib?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 28/02/2020 16:15

And the British Museum is bound to have one.
Hang on..

Petrie Musum - Egypt and Sudan

Another vote for the Horniman Museum. And the V&A is likely to have something as well.

The October Gallery often has African art on display tho I'm not sure what's on just now. It's got a WC postcode iirc and is near a Tube stop.

If you can travel, the Pitt-Rivers museum in oxford is fab.

User721 · 28/02/2020 17:27

I was about to say the Pitt Rivers!

I’d think the British Museum and V&A would be good places to start. Here’s some info about the V&A’s African collection:

Pitt Rivers is sending all theirs back

MrsJoshNavidi · 28/02/2020 22:12

Back to where?

JemimaTab · 28/02/2020 23:06

Yes I think that’s right - the Masai have challenges Pitt Rivers for the return of some ancestral items. That said, if you’re ever in Oxford, Pitt Rivers is well worth a visit. Quite eccentric, but fascinating.

I have mixed feelings about governments asking for their museum stuff back. Part of me thinks it's only right and proper, but I also think that if it hadn't been looked after so well, it probably wouldn't even exist now
