Does this need to be looked at (trapped finger)

Ds 4 trapped his finger in a door last night.
Very upset at the time and did cold compress etc.
This morning he says it doesn’t hurt but it is pretty swollen and he is holding his hand very carefully not to touch anything.
Thoughts on if it should be checked out?

Oh poor little thing, I would get it checked out at the doctors.

Confusedtype2 · 27/02/2020 09:46

That’s what I thought but I phoned the dr and they have refused to see him told me to take him to a and e. Which seems like a massive overreaction seeing is it doesn’t seem to be bothering him much. We don’t have a minor injuries so can’t do that. Need to nip to supermarket in a minute so will ask the pharmacist to have a quick look and see what they suggest.

Is there a minor injuries unit near you that could take a look at it? Or you could call 111 for advice.

GP can't do anything, either it needs A&E or it doesn't need a GP, IYSWIM.

I'd probably leave it a day or so, see if it gets worse or better.

Nothing can be done for broken fingers anyway. Splint it to the finger next to it and continue with pain relief and ice.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 27/02/2020 10:03

I’d just give him pain relief if it’s not bothering him too much.

My DS trapped his finger in the door (nearly slit it in halve, he had to have op to have it sewn back onEnvy). His was broken underneath but that wasn't treated. The main thing is that the nerves aren't damaged, so I would just check that your DS can feel the end of his finger other than that I don't think you can do much.

Seeline · 27/02/2020 10:13

I would go to A&E. There may be other damage - nerve etc that needs to be checked out, but I would think they would X ray too.

Inforthelonghaul · 27/02/2020 10:26

Dd fractured the end of her finger when it got shut in a door but they didn’t xray it and said as long as she has sensation and it’s not distorted it will heal by itself.

Inforthelonghaul · 27/02/2020 10:28

Also her nail turned black as there was blood underneath it but eventually it fell off and a new one grew and now you’d never know. Took ages mind.

CornishPorsche · 27/02/2020 10:29

I fractured the top of my finger in a car door. The GP can't see that.

They xrayed mine obv, and I was prescribed antibiotics as there was a massive split on the tip, so they wanted to prevent bone infection.

Still worth getting it looked t even if no open wound. He may need to splint it.

I'd give some calpol for now if he's not too bothered by it.

porple · 27/02/2020 10:32

it happened to DS and was the same as @Inforthelonghaul, went purple and fell off. i’d check he can feel his finger and give him some calpol if he is okay
