Any parents of hyperlexic children out there?

I’m just curious really!

DS has recently turned three and in the last few weeks I’ve noticed that he’s started to ‘read’ words. Today he’s probably read 15 or so different words in different circumstances e.g reading them off a placemat in a local cafe, so not just repeating his favourite book iyswim. Some of the words he’s ‘read’ are milk, old, brown, coffee, foam, pants, splash and easy.

I did a bit of googling and came across hyperlexia 3. He has a speech delay in relation to his spontaneous speech but knows hundreds of words, he struggles socially with his peers sometimes but is getting better, loves numbers, has known the alphabet and his letters for ages. He’s been assessed by a paediatrician for autism and was discharged straight away.

Have any other parents been through this? I’m unsure of whether to mention it to the SALT in case she think I’m mad!

Often coexists with autism but see you’ve been discharged.

I think it often gets mistaken for autism because of the speech delay and the social awkwardness. DS has good eye-contact, he isn’t fixated on a routine and has no sensory problems.
