Mental health, autism, hope and getting back into education

Hi,

I’ve had a very rough past 2 years. I had just finished uni and had been working for a year, when I completely fell apart. I was delusional, hallucinating, very depressed, very anxious and badly self harming. I have a long history of mental health issues but had been doing okay through uni. Unfortunately that did not continue when I started working. I’m autistic too, which I don’t think helped, and I think I just completely burned out.

Over the past two years I have really struggled, various failed suicide attempts, lots of self harming and lying in bed all day. I can now say I’m getting back to where I was 3 years ago. I’ve been on an 8 hour flight by myself. And I’m getting back into education. I decided before I’d even finished uni that I wouldn’t be doing any work related to the course I did.

I’ve decided now to do something completely different and I’m going to be starting an introductory distance learning course soon, with the view to doing some volunteer work in the rest of the year and next year, before applying for a hnd (two year college course) in the course I want to do.

Anyways, I just wanted to post and maybe give some hope to people who are struggling, as I never believed things would get better. But they did get better and I feel I’m in a much stronger position now than I was in 3 years ago. I’ll be on medication for quite some time but it keeps me level and not delusional, so I’ll take it.
