Help me to cull the towel usage in my house!

There are 5 of us- 11/15/17 and two adults.

All have a shower every day, DS often has a bath too. DDs will use a bath towel for hair and one for body each time. I have just done a tidy up and found one or two towels in every bedroom (some wet on the floor) and 5 (5!!!) hanging on the back of the bathroom door. I have no idea how many times they have been used and as I washed the whole lot of towels on Monday-am sick of this!

What happens in your house?
Own towels? Colour coordinated?
One use only and in the wash?
Own washing?
Fewer towels?!

Advice needed before the teens get back from work and the family meeting starts....

I don't have a large housed, but getting the twisty hair towel things (like a Turbie Twist, but not) was amazing in reduction of soggy towels. I got them from Decathlon for less than £5. 1xbath sheet and 1xhair towel now last a week each, and the hair ones dry quickly on bedroom radiators.

ohdearmymistake · 22/02/2020 15:40

One bath sheet each, colour coded hung on the bannister, washed when I remember usually a week (ish)

thistimeisshort · 22/02/2020 16:25

We all have different coloured towels. Towels get hung on heated towel rail after each bath/shower. We use them for about a week then wash. Every day is too much. You are drying a clean body and if the towels are hung up they're completely dry quickly.

Snowflake9 · 22/02/2020 16:28

Hang towel after use on hook in airing cupboard.each have our own. Washed weekly.
.for my hair I have a hair wrap which gets washed weekly too along with hand towels.

BentNeckLady · 22/02/2020 16:29

We’ve got communal towels and wash them when they need washing.

Spain1 · 22/02/2020 17:00

I can't get over that people use the same towel for the week or family members share towels. Five of us here shower every day & a fresh new towel every time I must be mad. There are going to be changes around hereSmile

lilgreen · 22/02/2020 19:40

@Spain1 patting a clean body doesn’t dirty a towel with one use.

starfishmummy · 22/02/2020 19:48

Hide all except one each. Wash occasionally.

Beamur · 22/02/2020 19:53

Three of us at home. None of us shower daily. DD always uses a clean towel and puts it in the wash. DH and I put a used towel to dry and use it again. Hand towels are changed daily though.

umberellaonesie · 22/02/2020 19:55

A set of towels, so hand towel (for hair), small bath sheet and large bath sheet everyone has their own colour washed once a week

teenagetantrums · 22/02/2020 20:01

When my kids at home. Diff colour towels for each off us. I washed them once a week. If they were not in bathroom to wash they stayed on teenage floor or they could wash them.

teenagetantrums · 22/02/2020 20:02

I still don't understand the washing towels more than once a week. They used to dry a clean body

Sinuhe · 22/02/2020 20:02

We have switched to hammam towels. Each person has their own colour. They are "stored" on the towel radiator and washed once a week. The towels are fantastic! Less bulk when washing, they get softer with each wash (no softener or tumble dryer needed ) and dry quickly. Depite being thin, they absorb water very well. They also great for gym and holidays.

I wash every towel after each use i dont know why actually and i realsed from this thread that this isnt the norm..

woodhill · 22/02/2020 20:09

Only 3 of us but there has been 5. Everyone had their own bath sheet washed weekly. i have a large radiator with towel rail for mine and dh.

DS has his in shower room

Toria70 · 22/02/2020 20:09

DH and I have got one colour set for our bathroom, and our DDs have another set for theirs. I lost the plot last year washing load after load of towels, and have put well over half of them away in the loft.

It's made a massive difference, and they have now have a vested interest in drying them instead of leaving wet on their floors Hmm I then wash them all once a week at 60c and it's one load instead of about 5!

Fairylea · 22/02/2020 20:13

We each use a fresh bath sheet for each shower. They then get put in the dirty washing cupboard and I wash when there’s enough for one big 10kg wash. We buy our bath sheets from Asda, we have loads of them and keep the clean ones folded up in a cupboard ready for anyone to use.

I wouldn’t want to share a used towel with anyone!

Thebookswereherfriends · 22/02/2020 20:13

Family of three - towel each, I also have a hair towel. Hung up after use and washed weekly. Hand towels washed every couple of days.

kingofkings · 22/02/2020 20:14

Own towel to then be dried on radiator of own room and used fir few days

kingofkings · 22/02/2020 20:16

Yes should have said I put small hand towel on a towel rail in bathroom change quite often every couple of days at least.
I put clean bath and hand towels in pile in bathroom too.
