Any ideas on teen DD’s skin condition?

Just posting in Chat for traffic really. DD (13) has had an ongoing issue with her skin (mainly face) for over a year now. When it first started both eyes swelled up and she got some red inflammation on her forehead that kind of looked like spots but weren’t and also a patch on one cheek of dry scaly skin. Went to the GP and they said to use antihistamines. She had 2 more flare-ups where her eyes swelled up. Went back to the GP who said it seemed to be an allergic reaction but we couldn’t pinpoint to what as she wasn’t using anything different. DD does suffer from hay fever quite badly in spring/summer also. GP put her on the antihistamine Fexofenadine long term as she thought DD’s skin was continuously inflamed and had never completely cleared from the 3 big flare-ups, also would cover her for the hay fever months. We also totally stripped back DD’s skincare routine/products and she now just uses a Cetaphil face wash and moisturiser. Initially this worked a dream and her skin totally cleared up!

Now slowly over the space of a few months the skin complaint has started to come back despite DD still taking the antihistamines every day. We have been back to the GP and she has finally got allergy clinic referral in just over a month. She also had a blood test that ruled out any pet allergies and confirmed her grass and tree pollen allergy.

It is really getting DD down as she just doesn’t know what to do about the rash. They look like spots but are not as they just never go. She has tried squeezing them and nothing comes out and they just get red but still don’t go. I know that she is at an age where hormones are raging and that she will be a bit spotty but these just don’t look like usual teenage spots.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be and other things we can try? Have posted a pic so you can see.

It looks indistinguishable from my daughter’s acne at the same age

Well I have wondered that but wouldn’t the GP have recognised it as such? Did your DD take anything for it?

Try Aloe Vera - look in the health food shops for shampoo and soap to clean the skin.

Worth a try

Well you’ve got the ball rolling with the dermatologist referral and the allergy tests. Just have to wait now.

Until then perhaps continue to take the antihistamines for the itching sensation or try something like dermol to soothe the skin and gently clean it. If it’s getting her down, perhaps a light a bit of makeup.

The allergy clinic will want to know about all of products that she used on the area - both the packaging and the product itself will be needed on the actual test days. She might be allergic to a random ingredient/chemical.

Just a really, really, random idea. Does she do any sports where she wears a helmet, or does she regularly wear a bike helmet? My DD can't wear anything round her forehead as she comes out in small spots. We didn't go the doctor, but it became apparent over time what was causing it, and we think it is a combination of sweat, plus non-breathing plastic materials, whilst doing something vigorous.
