It was a present and I was a bit Hmm when we started playing it. We've talked about the wives can be butchers, builders etc too.

Straight in the bin with them. What a crock of crap.

Who published them? What's the name on the packet?

Oysterbabe · 21/02/2020 11:25

It says Paul Lamond Games.

I remember this game as a kid... shame they’ve not updated it at all...

Sandsnake · 21/02/2020 11:29

I remember that game from my childhood and the point you raised irritating me as an eight year old! Thing is, it would be pretty easy for the manufacturer to fix. You would just alternate who the ‘professional’ was and who was the spouse. So Mr Meat the Butcher and then Mrs Meat the butcher’s wife but Mrs Hammer the builder and Mr Hammer the butcher’s husband.

Tweet them about it.

Sandsnake · 21/02/2020 11:29

*builder’s husband.

SoupDragon · 21/02/2020 11:36

I bet there are no same sex couples in the pack either.

Allthebubbles · 21/02/2020 11:39

The other one that gets me is Penguin pairs, the male penguins have a variety of occupations, the female ones just seem to look nice.

MissSueFlay · 21/02/2020 11:42

What about Mr Meat the Butcher, and Mrs Meat the civil servant
Or Mrs Doctor and her partner Mr Hammer

peachgreen · 21/02/2020 11:52

I love Happy Families as a game. Usborne do a better set in terms of gender equality though no "non-traditional" family set ups unfortunately. www.funlearning.co.uk/toys/for-4-year-olds/usborne-happy-families-card-game/

highlandcoo · 21/02/2020 12:00

Slightly off-topic but I read the Ahlberg Happy Families books with my kids loads. Miss Jump the Jockey, Mrs Plug the Plumber, Miss Brick the Builder's Baby, Mrs Vole the vet .. all fab.

Lordfrontpaw · 21/02/2020 12:02

Tippex out the ‘...‘s wife’ bit.

Booboostwo · 21/02/2020 12:06

What crap!

DD was gifted a couple of books from a series about jobs/professions/occupations. All the women were cooks, home makers, nurses, child carers, etc. all the men were doctors, scientists, engineers, etc. Sadly this shit is everywhere.

LynetteScavo · 21/02/2020 12:11

There's obviously a market for the same game with same sex marriages, inter-race marriages, pictures of people with disabilities, etc.

The fact that all the characters are white would bother me more than a character being known and "the butchers wife"

Sexnotgender · 21/02/2020 12:13

That’s dreadful!

Lllot5 · 21/02/2020 12:14

I wouldn’t even have noticed this at all.

Littlepond · 21/02/2020 12:15

Bin it! Outdated sexist crap

Oysterbabe · 21/02/2020 12:15

Yeah the lack of diversity is also pretty shit. The thing that jumped out at me immediately was just that everyone is identified by their relationship to the man. As pp said, it would be very simple to have the woman as the professional in half the sets. I'm surprised that toy makers aren't more alive to this kind of thing these days.

My local Entertainer has pink "girls"aisle and a blue "boys" aisle. It totally confused DD when she was 6yo because she wanted something from the "boys" - I've never taken her back, so this doesn't surprise me.

The manufacturer probably thinks they're forward depicting females in trousers.

user53976478853 · 21/02/2020 13:17

Ultimately we are all just here as accessories for the menfolk.

user1495884620 · 21/02/2020 13:27

It's a really old game, dates back to Victorian times when people were pretty much defined by their relationship to the man of the family. Maybe tell your DD about the history of it and how lucky she is to live in a time when she has so many opportunities open to her.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 21/02/2020 13:35

"Miss Steak" Was she a mistake?

bookmum08 · 21/02/2020 14:10

This is a very old classic card game. I have a version which the families are dressed old fashioned. It came with a set that included the game Old Maid - the illustrations look like they are meant to be Second World War style and Snap which the pics are Cowboys and Indians.
They're games. A bit of fun. I think a child would have to be bought up with a very blinkered and closed off view to think that a woman couldn't be a butcher because a card game said so.
Next you will be telling me that children get confused while watching nature programmes because the hippos aren't hungry hungry and they don't eat marbles.

KahlanRahl · 21/02/2020 14:56

Does everyone have exactly 1 son and 1 daughter?

BestOption · 21/02/2020 15:08

Its A game. If your child’s out look is formed on the basis of a single game - you have bigger issues in life

If it’s not then what’s your problem.

If you simply must you can use it as a talking point

If not you could just play the damn game.

There’s really NO need to make such a big fat Fucking Fuss about every single little bloody thing.
