Can anyone help me remember this building? An old nunnery or women’s hospital built around a circular hall

I saw it on a tv program but I can’t remember enough specific details to Google successfully.

It’s now somewhere people can hire to stay in, maybe for retreats?

It had a long history, as a sanctuary for women, maybe involving nuns, or as a hospital. It has a big central circular room, bedrooms off this room, so to get anywhere else in the building you went through this central communal room/hall.

It might be in Yorkshire?

The devonshire dome at buxton?

That looks lovely, but no. It was much less grand, and still had the sort of stripped back nunnery type feel. It was run as a historical site.

How big are we talking? 3 or 4 bedrooms or a lot?

Kubo · 18/02/2020 21:59

A lot of bedrooms, all off the main circular communal room. Not at all grand. There might have been religion involved but definitely the feeling of women doing it for themselves, like it was founded by a particular woman for that purpose.

Ooh I’ve definitely seen that before, it looks lovely

Grin I'm now trying to find the TV programme you mentioned! Would love to see it.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it was on grand designs, as an example of a circular structure?

OK, thank you, I'm going to try find the programme.

It's very near my home but doesn't seem to be open for day visitors, unfortunately.

The Landmark Trust website has lots of info including a plan and 360° photos.
