2 nights in London, where to stay.

We are hoping to go to London in may for my birthday. Never been to London before.

We would like to be able to visit, the war museum, natural history museum and the tower of London. Anything else will be a bonus.

And hope to catch a show.

Which area should we stay, is it best to use buses or the underground, can we walk between sites?

We will be going by train, can we leave our overnight bag at the hotel early or are there left lockers?

Any other tips to get the best trip would be appreciated.

The budget for the hotel bed and breakfast is about £300 at the most or is that not enough.

Great! - where will you arrive at? There is a nice hotel opposite Kings Cross station - the standard: www.booking.com/hotel/gb/the-standard-london.en-gb.html

So if you stayed here you'd be opposite the tube and outside that hotel is the 91 bus which takes you to Covent Garden (the stop to get off at is called Savoy Street') then you walk slightly back on yourself and you will be at the start of Covent Garden (Wellington Street) which is lovely.

Also just maybe 2 or 3 stops down on the 91 is where my parents always stay (Russell Square area, on the 91 and has a tube):

PS Sorry - after walking back on yourself after getting off at the 'Savoy Street' bus stop, you cross the road and will be at the start of Wellington Street, where the 'Lion King' theatre is.

you can bus or tube just about anywhere though!

Bankside is a good place to stay- a range of hotels, hilton, premier inn holiday inn, citizen m etc

How much spending money are you taking?

I usually stay in the premier inn opposite Euston, and there's a new one opposite st Pancras now too

It's about £150 a night, double bed and one single

I love Covent garden, oh and borough market which is nearby, you can walk along the Thames to the globe just to look round

There will be just me and Dh, we will arrive at Euston station. Spending money will be about £600 or is that not enough.

As I said it's a very big birthday so I am being spoilt.

Hilton bankside in an executive room- you get breakfast and evening drinks/snacks, afternoon tea in the lounge if you book an executive room.

Conrad St james is nice but the rooms vary a lot

The nicer hotels are often cheaper than the cheap ones at the weekend, Sunday is the cheapest pest night of the week.

Hotels will keep your bags so I suggest booking a hotel near the station you will use. Also saves taking luggage on the underground. If you arrive early and leave late you can maximize the time of your trip.

For the train consider and advance booking of first class if it is a special occasion. It’s often not hideously more (12 weeks prior seems to be the best time to book) and you usually get drinks/snacks plus it’s a bit more special.

Buses and the tube are great but also consider walking if you can as you see a lot more.

Once you have your dates and hotel booked I would book the show next so you can get one you fancy. Alternatively if you’re really not bothered you can often get cheap tickets in the morning from Leicester Square. I like Cote for a pre theatre meal which isn’t too expensive.
