Weatherproof teenage footwear?

My teenage boys wear plain black trainers. Nothing else. Their feet have been getting so wet. They say they don't mind having wet feet, but I mind. One wears leather shoes to school, the other will only wear trainers.

What do your teens wear on their feet that might be at least a tiny bit more waterproof than thin fabric trainers?

Mine are not very label-conscious, they don't really know what's the label to be wearing, but they are always worried about getting it wrong.

We are going shopping this evening, have a choice of Sports Direct, JD Sports, Clarks, Schuh, Skechers, so lots of options. Surely there will be something?

And the Mountain Warehouse type hiking boots but I don't think they'll accept any of those.

Any tips gratefully received.

Leather trainers like Nike Airforce if you can stomach the £ but there must be cheaper versions.

We have never moved beyond Sports Direct where they pick plain black trainers from the piles of boxes in the middle, not even the more expensive ones you choose off the wall.

I suspect it's time to move on up to something fancier. I've probably done well to last this long on cheap and cheerful.

I had a thread about this for my son who is a lifeguard and who was getting wet feet - we ended up with something along these lines which have been great:

My lifeguard ds has to wear slides on deck but after several years of watching him wear black converse in -30 we have finally persuaded him into north face hedgehogs. They might be a bit full on, but they are black, and I’m still boggled that ds is actually wearing them.

They used to always have goretex boots for the winter when they were small enough to just wear what I gave them. I'd love it if they would wear those North Face boots but my goodness they are pricey when they are still growing.

My dc wear Doctor Martens.

Try Karrimor with Weathertite lining, usually a reasonable price in Sports Direct and very waterproof! DS1 has these ones

I am a bit - well he’ll mend them! but if you are feeling sympathetic it might be worth looking for a gore-tex outdoor/hiking type trainer. Timberland do them but even on sale they are pricey.

timberland

Sealskinz socks, won’t stop the trainers getting wet but their feet will be dry!
