New boiler fiasco - sympathy needed

So our boiler packed in at the start of the week and I've arranged to have a new one put in today but it turns out my house is the house that Jack built.

So far we've had to have the gas supply cut off to 2 gas fires (that I thought were disconnected anyway) and the gas hob. Because the gas engineer was getting readings of a gas leak.

He then drilled through an electrical cable which took out all the plug sockets upstairs. I had been up in DS's room keeping away from the noise and dust etc (DS only 12 weeks). However since the sockets went out my wee electric heater wasn't working so we've had to come downstairs. Workmen stink of cigarettes although they aren't smoking near the house.

I now have an electrician in the bedroom ripping up floor boards to repair the wire and the boiler still isn't in almost 12 hours after they arrived!

My house is falling apart!

Ugh sounds like a nightmare especially with a little baby and it being freezing out! Have they said how much longer it'll take?

Handbag101 · 16/02/2020 19:56

Awww OP. Sounds a nightmare. I can sympathise, I really can. Hopefully it will get sorted soon. Houses can be nightmares can't they.....

Oh gosh op do you have a friend or relative you can escape to with the baby? Do you have an oh who can deal with the house?

amazedmummy · 16/02/2020 20:09

"Not long" is the timescale I'm working with. Not really anywhere to go with the wee one. I'm hoping it'll be sorted soon. Currently missing call the midwife because they've had to switch the power off again.

They're just cleaning up now but not all my sockets are back and they'll need to come back out to finish it.

I hope you have heating after all that time.

If it's any consolation, I once went 4 days without a boiler. The old one leaked oil in the basement, and before they put in the new boiler they had to remove the concrete basement floor, remove and replace all the walls up to waist-height, check for leaked oil in the soil below, put in a fume mitigation system, repour the basement floor, and wait for it to dry.

They actually paid for us to move to a hotel for the first night because the house stank of oil, then we moved back in. Luckily it was a warm September :-)

Hope you have warmth and power soon!

We have a boiler! And an electrician coming back at some point to get power back to the rest of my sockets.
