What ever happened to kumquats?

Just that really. I realised today that I haven’t seen kumquats for a very long time. Are they seasonal? Or just out of favour?

Come to think of it I've not seen them for ages either! I seem to think they're a winter fruit (in the UK) so maybe just fallen out of favour. They weren't the nicest thing to eat, all that peel.

LikeDuhWhatever · 15/02/2020 19:16

Those things are vile. Possibly the worst fruit I’ve ever tried.

Jaxhog · 15/02/2020 19:17

I wondered that. They are supposed to be in season at the moment too.

I loved them. Nice, sweet peel then sour juicy bit in the middle - delicious

I was even in Waitrose today and thought i would do a check - none to be seen

I bought my mum a little kumquat tree in a pot and it’s happily fruiting right now. I remember having them as children occasionally but haven’t seen for so long

Passmethecrisps · 15/02/2020 19:25

Season is November to March.

They remind me of being a child in the 80s and getting to pick one thing to buy to eat when my dad and brother went bowling. Kumquats or a pomegranate

They seem to be out of favour. The only place I've been able to find them the last few years is Parsnips in Borough Market and only then around the late Autumn/Winter period. They're a nice addition to cranberry sauce but I ended up using clementines at Christmas this year as I didn't have time to trek over there.

You might find some in a larger greengrocers.

Elouera · 15/02/2020 19:30

Out local veg shop have them, but rarely. I love making marmalade from them when I see them. My nan had a tree in her garden (abroad) and I have have fond memories of making jam with her. Smile

TheNestedIf · 15/02/2020 19:31

Oooh! I've just noticed Ocado have them in.

Passmethecrisps · 15/02/2020 19:56

I don’t know why they popped into my head recently - I can’t think when I last had them.

Interesting that they do seem to have gone out of favour

Blame the re-introduction of the Kumquat Eagle in their native Kumbania.

JeezyPeeps · 15/02/2020 20:01

I saw some in M&S last week

WhatNowFrantic · 15/02/2020 21:08

HeronLanyon · 15/02/2020 21:11

Partridges in Chelsea had some a few weeks ago. I agree they are very rare.

Passmethecrisps · 15/02/2020 21:14

Damn those kumquat eagles!

I can see now that my DH is going to come back from Costco next week with 36383378 kumquats

Passmethecrisps Buy a tree as a houseplant and you'll have your own supply.

Ginfordinner · 15/02/2020 22:41

Funnily enough, I was going through my recipe folders and found a recipe for a warm turkey and kumquat salad, and realised that I haven't seen any kumquats in the shops for years.

They grow in Corfu.
