Vegan cake

Seriously these things need a warning label.

I just ordered a gorgeous looking coconut cake in a cafe, bit into it and it’s the most sickly, stodgy, dry piece of crap I’ve ever eaten. Told the waiter and he said ‘yeah it’s vegan’. Not labelled though!

Do places no bother labelling vegan things anymore? Not everyone wants to eat fake shite.

Has anyone ever actually eaten a nice vegan cake? I’ve eaten so many out of politeness but honestly they are foul.

Bring back eggs & butter and nice food 😋

I made the Wine Cake from Thug Kitchen cookbook and it's lovely. I've served it to people and haven't told it's vegan they are non the wiser.

I'm with you, op. Lots of margarine and baking powder does not make delicious cakes. Total waste of calories.

I think stork is great..eggs are too.

The thing is, if you serve a guest cake they aren’t going to spit it out and say it’s disgusting. Most people are very polite. I’ve done it myself many times and pretended to like vegan cake 🎂. I will persevere and give some of the recipes a go though and report back 😊

Stork is woeful stuff, full of palm oil - I’m surprised vegans eat it to be honest.

I think vegan cake is hard to do well, I had a shop bought one yesterday that was slimy, synthetic and tasteless.

this recipe by Meera Sodha is my best so far, tastes 'real'. It's not risen, more like a tart but at least it tastes good!

"Drives me mad as well....I really don't want to eat chemically rubbish. I don't eat much cake, but it's quiche that has thrown me a couple of times - really nasty pastry and when I've complained they've said "oh yes, it's gluten free/egg free.

I'm really not into processed food at all and don't want to unknowingly consume it."

Underneaththeash why is vegan or gf cake or pastry more likely to be more processed? Surely vegan pastry is just going to be flour with oil or marg, and gf pastry will just be rice flour/gf flour with butter/lard/whatever? I often make pastry with no egg.

Smittenkitchen.com has a delicious olive oil and chocolate cake that happens to be vegan - I'd recommend that one.

UntamedWisteria · 16/02/2020 18:52

GF pastry is really hard to make because it is the gluten that gives it its characteristics.

So you need to use additives which mimic the attributes of gluten..

vegan pastry should be fine though - most commercial pastry is vegan.

underneaththeash · 16/02/2020 20:00

@Laquila have you looked at the ingredients in GF flour or vegan substitute food?

Tanaqui · 16/02/2020 20:48

I agree- and I have to eat gluten free! I hate it when the gf cake is also vegan/ dairy free as it means it is firstly made of a ton more artificial substitutes and secondly usually tastes crap- I also hate that palm oil/ margarine taste.

UntamedWisteria · 17/02/2020 07:38

It's annoying isn't it Tanaqui - DS is coeliac. The manufacturers sometimes seem to lump all dietary restrictions into one thing and the result inevitably tastes of cardboard.
