Hives after eating pesto? Pine nut allergy? Please help!

DD has come out in hives on 3 occasions now. I initially thought the culprit was grapes but I now think it was actually pesto as she’s not had grapes today so it can’t be that.

I’ve googled and it looks like it could possibly be a pine nut allergy. I know nut allergies can be the most serious. We are off on holiday this weekend so I can’t take DD to the GP until we are home. I’m thinking the GP might want to have some tests done possibly?

I will try to avoid pine nuts but I’m wondering if she can continue to eat other nuts between now and us visiting the GP? Anyone with any experience on this? Thanks so much.

You've had good advice and it does sound like a pine nut allergy. But I just want to second the advice about histamines as it may also be relevant. Histamines are in all foods in varying amounts. Canned foods and foods that have been opened or left out for a longer time are much higher in histamines. The histamines increase the older the food is. Parmesan cheese is particularly high in histamines, and if the jar has also been open for 6 weeks than it's going to really raise the histamines s lot more. So I think it's worth bearing in mind. Google for more info. I suffer from hives with high histamine foods.Tomatoes and strawberries are high in histamines. Good luck!

My son has a mild nut allergy and has reacted to pine nuts before, getting hives just like your child. We've asked doctors about it several times, but because he's never had a severe enough reaction (except asthma) to go to the hospital, they haven't done any tests. Take some antihistamines with you and avoid nuts.
