A lot of my DD’s friends aged 18/19 were posting on social media about the cards/sweets/flowers etc they’d received from their mums! DD was disappointed she didn’t get anything from me!

One of the traditional ways to send Valentine's cards and gifts was to be anonymous. You sent them to someone who you essentially fancied! That was a big thing in the Georgian/Victorian era. So it wasn't really about 'lovers' because you wouldn't have been at that stage of a relationship.
