RSL music instead of GCSE

Hi, my sons school are considering doing RSL music level 2 instead of GCSE and I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this. Music is my son's (Y9 currently) main subject, he already earns money from it so is likely to be a career choice also so it is important to him.

From what I can see it is a GCSE equivalent but is graded pass, merit, distinction so goes up to an A not an A* equivalent (not a huge deal). Would this make a difference for music college etc?

There is limited info online unfortunately so was hoping someone out there would know a bit more. Thanks.
