We live in the East Midlands and we're supposed to be driving up to the Scottish Borders on Monday for a week's holiday. It's with a family member, so we haven't paid for accommodation or anything.

I'm in two minds about whether still to go due to the weather and Storm Dennis on the horizon. I need to decide by tomorrow really.

How bad is it? Have you had any weather warnings? Are you expecting snow / ice / heavy rain?

I just don't want to be stranded with the DC far from home!

In north east..so you’d go up the a 1 not too far from us and it’s lovely here.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 14/02/2020 10:26

You'll be fine. We're just inland from Druridge Bay, and we've had far less wind than everywhere else. Your best route is M1-M18-A1. If there's a really high wind Tinsley viaduct closes and Sheffield becomes impassable.

CormoranStrike · 14/02/2020 10:36

Dennis is meant to be way worse in the west coast, east will just be the normal extremes of February

4forkssake · 14/02/2020 10:39

In the NE & weather's fine today but looking at the weather app, it's meant to be worse on Monday so hard to call, unless you can wait until closer to the time as a lot can change at the moment.

happycamper11 · 14/02/2020 11:25

It's coming in from the west and doesn't look too bad at all for the east - probably gone by Monday anyway as it's coming in tomorrow. Follow windy Wilson on FB as he's really accurate and updated regularly during storms

happycamper11 · 14/02/2020 11:26

Ps I'm currently in the central Borders and driving back to Edinburgh tomorrow. Was going to leave today due to Dennis but it now looks like it won't be too bad so happy to leave it til tomorrow now

Stravapalava · 14/02/2020 11:41

That sounds promising!

Not much going on here, about 20 knot gusts and the odd spatter of rain. Very warm though.

happycamper11 · 15/02/2020 16:19

Just done my drive up the A68 from the border - was wet rods are quite waterlogged but took it easy and no issues. It is supposed to get windier tomorrow in to Monday but so far worst seems to be Sunday night and will die out from there

happycamper11 · 15/02/2020 16:22

*roads not rods

Stravapalava · 16/02/2020 22:55

Shameless bump - I think we're going, but would appreciate knowing the current conditions on the ground if you don't mind! M1 / A696 / Bonchester Bridge / Jedburgh etc. Our destination is ok apparently. Thanks!

I drove from Newcastle through Jedburgh and up the A68 tonight at 6pm. All fine. There was less water on the road than when I drove down this morning at 8am.

The wind has picked up a bit further up the A68 tonight but no more rain where we are. Where are you headed?
I know Hawick has it bad in areas and some roads near Newcastleton and Kelso area were closed today

andyindurham · 16/02/2020 23:01

County Durham has blustery winds, not much rain, all main roads driving as normal. You might encounter some snow on the higher ground when you get to the Border (couple of years ago I ran into a bit of a blizzard at Carter Bar, which made for an interesting 20 minutes or so until I got through it), but I wouldn't anticipate any serious problems. And the snow I saw on the hills in Teesdale earlier today was very sparse.

Breathmiller · 16/02/2020 23:01

@Stravapalava
Feel free to PM me your destination

Stravapalava · 16/02/2020 23:43

Thank you all, that has made me feel a bit better.

Any word on the M1, Notts / Yorks way?

Can't comment on the English part but it's currently very windy here. Meant to die out mid morning and the rain has stopped. Some roads by rivers around Jed and Hawick were closed but seems to be back to normal now and forecast for rest of week just damp. Have a great time
