Anyone grow their own mushrooms?

Not the fun ones, the culinary ones. Grin

I've had a couple of kits but can only manage two crops and it isn't enough!

Anyone have any tips or recommendations?

Hi do you mean from kits or actual sporing?

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 17:19

Sporing I think Grin
I'm hoping to have a tub that I can keep adding new spores but after the kit it gets complicated!

I've used kits years ago. It came in a box, then inside were various soil/mushroom compost components- one went on top of the other then watered. Kept moist and dark, it did produce mushrooms, but I found them sporadic, and never enough at the same time to make a meal!
Is that the sort you mean, or did you buy spores you seed onto a piece of wood?

I tried with a kit once and a million flies hatched out of the soil. Put me off a bit Grin

I was looking at the kits for growing the fun ones recently, recon I’m gonna have a go next time we have a gathering Grin

I’ll admit I clicked on this thread because my first thought was “ Oooh magic mushrooms” Grin

TheQueef · 12/02/2020 17:27

I've got leftover hay and soil, can I chuck some more spores at it?

My experience of mushroom growing is based entirely on Johnny Briggs growing them in his cellar c1988 so it is a punt but the ones I did grow were deliciousGrin

Happily I live in Yorkshire near sheep so fun ones are plentiful.
I daren't start my Ddad on a breakfast of fun mushrooms though, he got addicted to fisherman's friends Hmm

Coffee grounds work well but you'd need to go to a cafe and ask them for the grounds from the day as you need a lot of them and fresh ones. I think oats work too. Search FB as there are lots of groups about this.

TheQueef · 14/02/2020 14:30

Cheers Ken good tip about grounds, two drive through costas have opened near me so I will go and scrounge.
I've ordered spores from EBay mad lass so if I update randomness you'll know the grounds worked and they were fun shroom spores Grin

Ha, I'm afraid I too clicked on this all nostalgic for the time when the law hadn't caught up with grow-your-own-kits for mushrooms of the fun variety. Good times.

I grew magic ones once and it was a complete fucking saga over months. Pretty satisfying getting a crop in the end but I wouldnt do it again (before I get my door kicked in)

Patroclus · 14/02/2020 17:49

Kits are stil legal as far as Im aware.

MsRinky · 14/02/2020 17:51

Yeah, maybe, but I am no longer young and no longer live in a flat above a head shop. I have my memories...
