Why is my right breast rock hard, swollen and very sore?

I'm 45 and mid cycle. Regular periods. Friday my right breast was a bit sore and by Saturday so sore I can barely touch it. The whole outer side of it is hard and swollen.

Dunno, but you need to get that seen. I would consider 111 and an out of hours gp this evening if you can.

You've got an infection in the skin or ducts. Go to hospital now, you need antibiotics. Don't muck around, just go.

AhoyMrBeaver · 09/02/2020 16:28

I'd say that justifies a trip to at least a walk-in centre. It sounds like it could be infected.

Could be a number of things, some benign and some less so. Get to your GP ASAP.

Coldhandscoldheart · 09/02/2020 16:30

You could have an abscess or cellulitis. I believe that it is possible to get mastitis even when not breastfeeding but I may be mistaken.

The speed at which things are worsening implies It's infected. Breast abscesses are awful.

concernedforthefuture · 09/02/2020 16:37

Sounds like an infection. Could be mastitis (possible even if you're not lactating), a cyst or an abscess. I'd get an out if hours appointment ASAP. Sounds like you could do with some antibiotics.

How are you doing @bigbananafeet12?

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/02/2020 14:28

To be fair, this happens to me monthly as part of my cycle (though it's awful). Have had it checked loads and been told it's fairly common and can happen as a side effect of hormonal contraception or just without it. One or both breasts get very sore, get larger, feel lumpy in parts, are VERY painful- when my period actually starts it just disappears.

If it's not normal for you and hasnt been checked though as in your case, absolutely go and have it checked OP.

I had similar and it was mastitis... not because I was breast feeding - mastitis is just an infection in the breast tissue. Get over to the GP/walk in clinic.

It was absolute agony for me so giving you a gentle hug!

My boob was so swollen and sore that the doctors asked me, several times, was I sure I hadn't had a breast implant
