Girls who start their periods late

Notcontent · 06/02/2020 23:09

My dd is nearly 14 and has not started her periods yet. I am not really concerned as she has had other signs of puberty for quite a while, but I am a bit surprised as all her friends, including younger friends, have had periods for ages.

Does anyone else have a dd who started her periods late? Just curious if it’s as unusual nowadays as I think it is... And if so, did your dd continue growing a bit after she finally got her period?

My dd didn't start her period until a month before her 16th birthday, she's grown about 2 inches since then! You've nothing to worry about im sure Smile

CalmdownJanet · 06/02/2020 23:15

My dd is 14 and just started, it's not that late, or late at all I would have thought. I was 16. I know some of dd's friends don't have them either

CodenameVillanelle · 06/02/2020 23:16

I was 14, it's not late

My DD started late, she was turned 14. I remember her telling me that there was only her and one other girl left in their class and they'd been joking about taking bets for who'd be the last
Both she and the other girl are fairly tall where most of the petite girls started earlier so finished growing sooner

colouringinpro · 06/02/2020 23:17

My dd is 15 and only just started. It's ok.

Apolloanddaphne · 06/02/2020 23:19

My DD2 was 16 before she started hers. She was tall but skinny with little body fat. I don't think it is anything to worry about at this stage.

Drinkciderfromalemon · 06/02/2020 23:20

Dd spotted at 11 then nothing until 13.11. Had boobs, growth spurt but no period till then. Only had 3 now at 14.5

june2007 · 06/02/2020 23:22

I was 14 and ahalf, sister 15 niece around 15/16.

Notcontent · 06/02/2020 23:25

Thank you. My dd is very slim while being reasonably tall, so that might be part of it...

My DD had turned 12 about 6 months earlier, but my friends daughter had already turned 15 before starting.

Manchestermanchester · 06/02/2020 23:29

Ummm I was in year 7 and I’m not tall. If she’s normal height and weight don’t fret too mich

SarahBeeney · 06/02/2020 23:31

I was 14,and very average height. I then grew a lot from 14-17. My dd is 11 and I don’t think she’ll start hers any time soon.

oldfashionedtastingtea · 06/02/2020 23:31

How old were you and other family members? Sometimes it runs in families to start late.

Notcontent · 06/02/2020 23:37

I had just turned 12 when I got my period so that’s why it’s surprising for me.

She’s 13, not late at all

Ikeasucks · 06/02/2020 23:42

Think i was 15. Didn’t want it but was still relieved as had been worrying slightly something might not be right

ReturnofSaturn · 06/02/2020 23:43

I was 16!
Absolutely nothing wrong with me, I was always very slim though.
Had DC since.

Coffeeeeee · 06/02/2020 23:44

My daughter was 14 when she started and was the last out of her friends and the last in her form at a girls school, she has grown a lot since then and is now 16 & 6ft 2in! I really wouldn't worry...I used to remind my daughter that she was lucky not to have started early, I think she realises that now! Wink

hennyspennys · 06/02/2020 23:44

I was nearly 15 and one of the tallest.

skoobi1 · 06/02/2020 23:47

DD was 15 when she started. I was 10..!!!

anon2000000000 · 06/02/2020 23:53

I was 15 when I started mine.

Hadtoask · 06/02/2020 23:55

I was 15 and it felt really late because I never spoke about it to anyone. I’ve no idea what age my sister was or whether my friends all started earlier. I just assumed I was odd. I would never have been able to talk about it with my mother. I make sure to talk about it with my daughters now though.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I know I didn’t grow in height after that though. 5’1 since 15!

Hadtoask · 06/02/2020 23:58

I’ve got to add- I’m now well into my 50s and I can genuinely say that until tonight, reading this thread, I had thought I was the only person to have started having periods at 15! I never thought others had the same experience! This has been a revelation to me. I always felt ashamed. It’s quite incredible the amount of emotional baggage I’m carrying around with me. I’m so grateful for your post Op.

Notcontent · 06/02/2020 23:58

Thanks!! Sounds like it’s not that unusual!

i noticed a familial link; my mother started late and started menopause earlyish, i too started late (16) and started meno early, and my dd started at 16 as well.
i believe the nhs web site suggest seeing a dr if not started by 15 but honestly in the case of our family 16 was the norm.
being how fun menses are the later the better honestly...i feel horrible thinking of 10 year olds having to deal with that stuff.
