What age were your DC when they first went to the dentist?

I have a friend who has a 7mo DD who had her first dentist appointment.

My DS is 9 months and I haven't taken him yet.

Should I have taken him by now or is he still too young?

Also my DS has 2 little teeth at the bottom.
Do I need to be brushing them now? I haven't got the foggiest!

Yes start brushing now. Mine were between 18 months and 2 years for their first dentist checkup.

My dentist said to bring DS as soon as he had his first tooth. They really haven't done much in the way of dentistry yet apart from let him get acclimatised to the environment and being examined. He is now 3 ½ and I think his forthcoming appointment will be the first time that he will follow the instructions well enough to have a proper examination. Up until now it has mostly been talking to me about tooth hygiene etc and letting him sit in the chair.

Mine is 11 months and is going next week. When I last went 6 months ago they told me to bring him in next time. He has 8 teeth and has a chewable toothbrush which he loves. I do try with the real one too, but he tends to just bite down on it. Sometimes I can get a bit of brushing in.

Yes you need to be brushing twice a day. Get a baby toothbrush that goes on your finger if they still exist. I would get registered with a dentist ASAP.

I would just register your son at your dentist and arrange to take him with you when you go for your next checkup. At that age it's more to start getting them used to the environment of the dentists etc.

I took both my boys once they had their teeth start to cut - not immediately, just with me at my next checkup 😅. My eldest didn't get his first tooth until he was 11.5mths and my youngest was 10mths.

Yes, in the meantime you should get a baby toothbrush and baby toothpaste (don't use yours as it will be too strong) and try to get him used to putting a toothbrush in his mouth and doing his teeth twice a day. x

@sidneyp you can get toothpaste specifically for children, in the toothpaste aisle, it will say 0-2 years on the box.

I thought all children got to see an nhs dentists.

Brush their teeth from the get go but there’s no rush really as they don’t generally do anything fir child teeth anyway

Good to keep an eye on decay though as some kids have less enamel so good to know if susceptible

They went at the first appointment we already had booked in when they got a tooth. Not sure if that makes sense. So mine were around 12 months when they got their first tooth. Say that was July if we had an appointment booked in for us in September they went then.

Teeth should be brushed with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste as soon as they appear. Twice a day.

The dentist saw my babies as soon as they had teeth at my appointment. The dentist had a quick look inside their mouths. Then they had their own appointments the time after.

I can’t remember exactly what age they were, but it was definitely in their first year.

I had my check up not long ago. So by the sounds of it I should still be able to register my DS at my practice even though they aren't technically accepting new patients?

God I feel a bit shitty now, he's had 2 teeth for a while and I hadn't even thought about taking him him yet until now

Don't feel shit! Mine went just before he turned 2 and was fine. Dentist didn't have a pop that he should have come sooner.

I think it was 3 years old, as the Dentist said don't bother until then. My son still talks about his first time at the dentist! It was clearly memorable for him. It was actually exciting and a real "big boy" moment for him. Hehe.

We always brushed our DC teeth first and then handed over the brush for their own chewing regimen.
