Have you tried screen mirroring?

What happens ?

On my iPhone I swipe down diagonally and get a menu of options including the camera, torch and others. Screen mirroring is the one you want.

Oh, I think we also have an Apple TV box connected to the TV. If it's on, and logged in to the same WiFi network as the phone, it's all good.

You don't need an Apple TV; we don't and I can mirror from both my iPhone and iPad. It often doesn't connect, though. Try restarting your phone and if that fails, go into settings and reset network settings. This will also log you out of various apps etc and you'll need to reconnect to WiFi.

That will depend on your TV. So x C's asked 'smart' TVs that can connect to the WiFi network themselves wont need an Apple T. Box. Older models may need help.
