Why is Channel 5 so enamoured with Jane McDonald, of all people

And similarly, why is the BBC suddenly obsessed with Gemma Collins and promoting her whenever they can?

Grudgingly, I can accept the Gemma POV as she is popular (god knows why) but Jane? Why?

my 11 year old loves any jane McDonald programme so we are watching
I love this holiday show she does.
it's like the holiday shows of the 1980s /90s
really easy Fri night viewing

wowfudge · 31/01/2020 21:25

Jane is popular with a different demographic? She's done alright for herself based on some talent and her personality.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2020 21:26

I quite like her. She seems like the sort of person you could go down to the pub and have a laugh with.

On the other hand I don't know what Gemma Collins is for.

KindergartenKop · 31/01/2020 21:27

Jane is funny.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 31/01/2020 21:27

@FREEM
I don’t begrudge her, but do find it a bit odd that she’s on a show in a prime time Friday night slot. To me, it comes across as something that would be early evening Sunday viewing

She can be funny but why does she act so dumb? She says the most ridiculous things and sounds like she's lacking a brain cell or two and then later says something that makes you think that's all an act.

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2020 21:31

She just has a TV persona that's a bit ditzy. I think she's probably very intelligent.

nixkix · 31/01/2020 21:33

I think she probably is, that's what surprises me about the way she comes across, you can be ditzy without saying things about how you don't understand things or it's too complicated for you. She's a classic example of TV dumbing down when she doesn't need to and viewers don't need her to either.

AhoyMrBeaver · 31/01/2020 21:34

Jane McDonald is popular. I suppose she comes across as warm and genuine, a down to earth sort that people can relate to. She's been on the go for years, so must be doing something right.

The Victoria Wood character Stacey Leanne was a brilliant observation of her - the nervous verbal diarrhoea Grin

Love Jane. Likeable, fun and self deprecating. I would happily have a few WineWineWine with her.

SunshineDays2019 · 31/01/2020 23:18

I love Jane! Smile

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 31/01/2020 23:55

I’m sure Jane is lovely! I just don’t get why Channel 5 promote her in prime time slots.

I guess they have to fill their time slots since they cancelled Big Brother.

She provides stress free entertainment with a smile. As a PP said like the seaside special shows that used to come on on a Saturday night when I was a kid - inoffensive and watchable although half the presenters from the 70s are now unmentionable

Sparklingbrook · 01/02/2020 04:56

I never associate Channel 5 with 'prime time' TBF.

wendz86 · 01/02/2020 06:45

I once watched a presentation from the guy who controls channel 5 programming and basically any programme with her in it do really well . Other popular genres on channel 5 include Yorkshire , cruises and vets .

wowfudge · 01/02/2020 11:15

I have more of an issue with the GC tbh. Seems to be everywhere for no reason as all.

simonthedog · 01/02/2020 11:19

I'm not a Jane McDonald fan on the whole but I really like the holiday show.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/02/2020 11:32

Channel 5 is not really a prime channel and it’s pretty innocuous viewing and obviously enough people enjoy it to keep it going. I think Jane McDonald has been quite clever in finding the sort of programme that appeals to a reasonably broad demographic.

GC, on the other hand, is absolutely nothing but a ruthless self promoter. The minute she stops being in the news, there’s another ‘drama’.

Deathraystare · 01/02/2020 14:52

I like Jayne. Did not know her when on Loose Women but have enjoyed the holiday shows. Seems very warm and lovely though like a lot of 'Professional Northerners' always going on about where she lives!

BigFatLiar · 01/02/2020 14:58

Perhaps she's cheap.

Lionsleepstonight · 01/02/2020 15:28

She must be pulling in the viewers to be able to be given peak viewing slots. Especially when she's a demographic rarely seen on TV. Easy viewing, light entertainment.
Whats not to like?

rockingthelook · 01/02/2020 15:32

I think that she has seized the opportunity she has been given and done very well for herself, i agree she does do the 'professional northerner' a bit too much, however she comes across as likeable, and tbh I would much rather watch her in nice locations during the dark winter nights than some of the alternative. At least she has a talent unlike the loathsome, rude , crass, self promoting no mark that is Gemma Collins

Smallfacesfan · 01/02/2020 15:38

A friends DH interviewed her on a local radio station. He said on air she was lovely, off air not very nice at all. Her attitude towards other people was terrible.

Shamazing · 01/02/2020 15:41

There's nothing really to 'get' - she's popular so they've given her a prime slot. She's nice, quite funny and totally inoffensive so I can see why they've done so. Gemma Collins is popular? Not with anyone I know. 😂 x
