HELP?! How to make a MV using tv show scenes? Eg: chronicaling a character romance

I swear tf it shouldn't be so hard. But im 3 hours into downloading this and that and still no further alone! Probably given my computer computer aids too :/

I've always wanted to make one.If any kind soul could answer these questions i'd be very greatful?

1. How/what program should I use to download and convert dvd clips into useable clips for editing?
2. Best program for the actual editing? (I've downloaded the free version of We Video but dunno if its the way to go)
3. Are there any (safe) websites that I can download clips from (if I don't have the dvds) and how to go about this and do they then need to be converted into something else to be made into clips for the editing?

I'd love to just make an mv of a character romance and maybe upload to youtube.

Can anyone talk me through it?

Also, I know I didn't mention copyright issues but there are plenty of these MVS kicking about so assuming it is fine. Might never post it anywhere anyway.
