If you were a bag of clothes, where would you hide?

I've just spent half an hour looking in every room in the house to find a bag of clothes I had this morning. It had a few things in it that I wanted to take back to the shop.

It's a big, sturdy bag, made of the same plastic as those blue Ikea bags. and couldn't have got crumpled up under a sofa accidentally. (I looked there anyway though!)

I had it downstairs and moved it somewhere else so it wouldn't get dusty when we were doing some DIY. So it was definitely in the house this morning.

The only person to have left here today is exH. I even called him to make sure he hadn't picked it up accidentally. He definitely doesn't have it. FWIW he's definitely not the type of ex who would take it to mess with me.

Where would you put a bag of clothes, if you were a distracted mother being pulled in 5 directions at once? If you were a bag, where would you hide?

Boot of the car?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 17:27

Good suggestion but no, I don't have a car. I haven't left the house all day, either (non-UK, it's a holiday here).

Under the stairs? Airing cupboard? Spare room?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 17:29

We don't have an airing cupboard, but I'm going to have another look in the spare room now. I've checked under the stairs three times already, I really don't think it could be in there, but I'll take another look.

I was going to return them tonight, had my coat on all ready to go!

Fallen off the arm of a chair and down between the wall and the chair?

shalligoagain · 30/01/2020 17:31

Under a pile of laundry?

GoldLeafTree · 30/01/2020 17:35

Did you put them in the washing machine or laundry basket?

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/01/2020 17:35

Wherever a child shouted you as you were moving it... bedroom, by backdoor, toilet, kitchen?

TrippingOnSunshine · 30/01/2020 17:37

Hanged it on a coat peg? Or behind an open door?

TheDogsMother · 30/01/2020 17:38

In the outside bin/recycling ?

Apolloanddaphne · 30/01/2020 17:39

On a coat peg and there is now a coat over it.

milliefiori · 30/01/2020 17:40

utility room
under your bed
hanging on a hook on a door
if you're in a warm climate, outside the back door?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 17:44

So many great suggestions!

I've just double-checked the spare room and the cupboard under the stairs. It's definitely not in there.

I've checked the laundry basket and it's definitely not there either. There's one other 'pile' of clothes in the house which is the ironing basket, and lives under the stairs. Also checked.

Not in the washing machine.

Just double-checked every chair/sofa/armchair/stool in the house. It's not lurking down the side of anything.

I keep going back to DS's room because I had been going to put it in there, but I can't find it. There's a pile of coats on his bed as we're doing DIY in the entryway, and I've picked them all up one by one and moved them (ok, I did it twice) and it's not there.

I'm starting to feel like I'm going mad! I keep checking doorhandles that I know I've already checked, looking yet again at the hooks on the doors etc. I even looked in the fridge Hmm

A skip, the wheelie bin? Could someone have thrown them by mistake?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 17:47

On a coat peg and there is now a coat over it.

I keep thinking this. Have moved everything a few times to be absolutely certain.

I know that I was going to hang it over DS's bunk bed, but I didn't because I find it scary to have things hanging from it (he's old enough now for it to probably be safe, but we have cats too). And then... ???

I've been looking on the tops of everything to see if it might be there.

We're in a cold rainy climate, no garden, I did check my bags of recycling though!

Did you look under ds duvet?
Or a window sill?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 17:50

A skip, the wheelie bin? Could someone have thrown them by mistake?

Another good suggestion but there's no chance. Only XH and I could have done this (the children are still too young); I haven't left the house and XH didn't take any rubbish out. If he had potentially thrown anything out he would have said when I called him. We live in a neighbourhood with big central bins, so you don't take your rubbish out absent-mindedly; it's quite an undertaking. Besides he never bloody did it when we were together, I doubt he's suddenly going to start now Grin

Or a window sill?

I checked them all! I've read Maisy's Bedtime!! (For the uninitiated, Maisy Mouse loses her panda at bedtime and looks everywhere before realising she left him on the windowsill, then closed the curtains.)

Shoved in a big handbag?
Garage?
Hall drawer? Drawer in room nearest to where yiu were?
School bag/gym bag?

Raera · 30/01/2020 18:21

Have the children been playing dressing up?

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 18:24

@Raera I'd have noticed if they had (our house really isn't that big), but in any case I'd have found something by now. I'm convinced that I've put the bag in a "safe" place Hmm I've given up now tbh, I'm starting to make myself a bit mad with all my checking and double-checking.

In the bag of other shopping bags
Car front seat or boot
Near where you keep your handbag or car keys
In the place you put stuff for going to charity

TrippingOnSunshine · 30/01/2020 19:09

When this has happened to me I go to the middle of my house and shout "can I have my...whatever ..back now please???!!!"
It's surprising how often this works, I either see it or it pops in my head where it is..
bit woooo I know but worth a try!

2020cominatcha · 30/01/2020 19:25

@trippingonsunshine I'm not in the least bit woo but I had the oddest feeling before, when I was looking, that I was going to turn around and see the bag somewhere that I just KNEW I'd already looked.

Something funny happened last night that actually freaked me out a tiny bit.

Before Christmas I bought a pair of Christmas pyjamas on sale. I wore them a few times, then put them in the wash. Life being what it is, it was quite a while before I washed them, ironed them and put them back in the cupboard.

Last night I took them out and decided to put them on. When I did so, it was instantly obvious that one leg is now a good 3.5 inches shorter than the other. The children and I had a good laugh but in the back of my mind I was thinking, could there possibly be a hidden camera somewhere? Is someone playing a trick on me? Grin

The obvious answer is that one leg was slightly longer than the other to start with, so I didn't notice, and somehow the legs shrunk differently in the wash. Perhaps they were from different bolts of fabric or something. But you should see the pjs (I'm wearing them again now), they were NOT like this when I bought them! I look like a clown! So my non-rational brain is telling me that somebody has tampered with them (even though clearly this is nonsense).

Given the above, I might hold off until the morning to go shouting about the house - I'm home by myself and if I find the bag tonight I think I might have trouble sleeping Grin

What?! That is freaky!!
Yeah leave it until the morning to shout then!
Unless when you get up the bag is in the middle of the kitchen table!!
Sorry! Eeeeeeek!! Shock
