Anyone had a child on Nutramigen formula? Is this normal?

So DS is being investigated for a suspected CMPA and has been given Nutramigen formula but every time he has a bottle he promptly throws most if not all of it back up when being winded.

He was initially throwing up cow and gate formula which is one of the reasons they suspect the allergy but he's been much more sick since switching over on to Nutramigen on Tuesday to the extent he's having fewer wet napies as he's obviously not digesting as much milk.

I just want to know if this normal as the GP said most babies don't really like the taste and to persevere for a while on it, I felt a bit fobbed off when I rang to query it to be honest and he gave no indication of roughly how long I should be persevering for before going back to the GP.

Its worrying me that he seems more sick on this formula when in theory it should be making him better. Please tell me it's normal an others found their babies reacted in the same way.

How old is your ds?

He's 7 weeks.

If he is less than about 8 weeks I would worry about another cause for the vomiting

What else do you think could be causing it!? Alongside his other symptoms everything I've read does suggests he has an intolerance.

At that age I would want frequent follow ups if he’s not keeping anything down. Not knowledgeable but hope other posters can and have helped you.

My dd had a terrible dairy allergy and nutramigen didn’t work for her as it wasn’t broken down enough, she was slightly better on pur amino but tbh it wasn’t till we weaned her and she didn’t have as much milk that she started to get better! She completely dropped milk by ten months and hasn’t had any since!!

Sorry didn’t see your reply SmileCheese. Is the vomiting projectile?

There is something called Pyloric stenosis which is a narrowing between the stomach and the small bowel. Usually presents a problem in the first few weeks of life with an increase in vomiting. The bit that worries me was that your ds couldn’t even tolerate 1oz without vomiting. Babies can get quite poorly once it gets to this stage as they get chronically dehydrated. Have a look at the NHS pages on it and if you think it could apply to your ds then see a dr ASAP.

Hi OP both my DDs had CMPA and they were both my described Nutramigen in the first instance.
Whilst it did improve some of their symptoms the projectile vomiting, amongst many of their other symptoms still continued.
As your Dr said, many babies dislike the taste of hydrolysed and amino acid formulas but if your son is still being sick it would suggest to me that he needs an amino acid formula like Neocate.
With DD1 I had to beg for Neocate as most babies thrive on Nutramigen but once we did the switch her symptoms disappeared within 2 days and she was a completely different baby.
Keep a diary of the amount he is having and the amount he's vomiting as this will be useful for the dr to see if he needs something like Neocate.
Good luck OP. I remember it being such a stressful time and I hope you and your son see light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Just adding I feel really sorry for you and have been there myself. You do have to keep pushing and going back until you get answers and the right treatments. It will get better.
My baby had silent reflux and CPMA, but she ended up being fine on a hydrolyzed formula such as Nutramigen (we are in US so used Gerber Extensive HA which was a god send for us). I would agree with previous posters to return to the doctor due to the inability to keep down any milk, and insist on Neocate or buy it if you can

Hi - I could’ve wrote this OP myself. I just wondered if you managed to find a solution? My 8 week old has been put on Nutramigen and it’s definitely better for her. We have no thrashing around/pain drinking the milk but she is still very sick. We have an allergy appointment with a consultant on 7th December but it seems so long away when she’s being so sick. She is more settled on it however so once we can stop the sick, I think we might’ve almost cracked it with her problems. She was premature by 5 weeks and I don’t know if that has anything to do with it either, ie under developed bits in her tummy etc? She’s also on reflux medication omeprazole I think it’s spelt. Only for the last 3 days but so far I think it’s made her more sick. I really don’t know!!

DS was too allergic to CMP to tolerate nutramigen. As for a different formula.

So was he still being sick on nutramigen? What else is there? She’s even sick in between feeds just laid still. But it’s very watery sick.
