Do you ever just not bother with an evening meal?

DH works nights and sometimes I'll just have a bowl of cereal or a bagel instead of a proper meal. Some friends think this is awful and they would never last the night without a big dinner.

I always give the kids a nice meal but sometimes there might not be enough for me (e.g. tonight they had leftover chilli) so I just grab something later. However by the time I'm in from the gym, fed them and tidied up it might be 8.30pm and there's no way I can be bothered faffing on with something then!

Surely I can't be the only one...?

No, I often don't bother if in not hungry. Today I had a delicious cheese and tomato toastie for lunch at 3pm. It was so late I was not hungry at dinner time so I didnt eat. I had some raspberries while preparing food for the dc though. But I am old (47) so definitely do not need a huge amount of food.

AhoyMrBeaver · 28/01/2020 20:32

If I'm home alone in the evening I often have Weetabix or a bit of toast. I imagine that's pretty normal for lots of people.

Oblomov20 · 28/01/2020 20:34

Nope. Never. I always eat. A lot. And always have choices in the fridge, cupboards, freezer. Food is very important to me.

threesenoughthanks · 28/01/2020 20:36

I fed all the family tonight but I wasn't hungry so I had a bowl of curiously cinnamon. Often just don't feel like much. Sounds normal to me.

This makes no sense Maisie. The very elderly have reduced needs because they don’t do anything. You are a young woman still and clearly active!

FenellaVelour · 28/01/2020 20:40

Regularly. If I lived alone I'd survive on weetabix.

Bitchbadgerplease · 28/01/2020 20:41

Regularly have crackers and dips. Since ex and kid moved out I cba.

EnjoyyourBrexit · 28/01/2020 20:46

I've just had Weetabix because husband won't be home till probably half ten (he hasn't told me this, he just hasn't left work yet) and I cba to cook something nice that he might not want when he gets in. Annoying. But I do like Weetabix. I cooked for the kids earlier and had a bit of plain pasta. It's not ideal.

Every Thursday. Dh goes out to play football and then they go for A sauna. And often then to the pub Grin
I take the opportunity to do something quick for the dc, the 4 p’s (pasta, pesto, peppers and peas!) or fajitas etc and then don’t have any dinner myself. I do tell them I’m going to eat later with their dad!
But I usually go out for lunch on a Thursday because I know I won’t bother eating a proper meal in the evening. That way I can have all of downstairs tidy and clean by 7 and I can have a bath and chill nice and early.
Usually dh does the cooking (his choice) and as lovely as it is, we eat later than I’d like to sometimes and by the time we finish clearing up and sorting out the dc....
yeah, I just look forward to Thursdays because it’s quick and easy!

Crystal87 · 28/01/2020 20:47

Sometimes if I've had a big or lunch. But then I always end up hungry and snacking loads.

user1333796 · 28/01/2020 20:47

I'm exactly the same. Frequently when I go to dish dinner up for the kids there isn't enough for me, or I don't fancy it. I'm quite happy with their leftovers and then a bagel or some crackers later once they are in bed. Dp finds this really weird though and always has to make himself a 'proper' meal if we don't eat all together.

JKScot4 · 28/01/2020 20:49

I work odd hours so often eat later; quite partial to a toastie, soup, just a snack, don’t like anything heavy after 8.

UAintMyMuvva · 28/01/2020 20:50

If DH is out / the DC at activities (I’ll have prepared something ahead for them) I often just have eggs on toast or soup & bread.

When I was a young singleton I often used to have a bowl of Crunchy Nut cornflakes for dinner Grin.

Undies1990 · 28/01/2020 20:50

I'm the same. I'd be happy with some cereal or toast.

JoyceDivision · 28/01/2020 20:51

Yes, and yet DH can't get his head round not wanting a large meal on an evening.

Toast, crackers, random left overs on DC's plate Blush are satisfactory evening snacks for me most of the time

Northernsoullover · 28/01/2020 20:51

I'm happy with cereal some nights. If I'm late home or if the children have pizza I can't be arsed cooking.

unmumsymumof2 · 28/01/2020 20:53

100%. Id live on toast and cereal quite happily, I don't usually have breakfast, will have some fruit about 10am. Lunch is about 12 so either a jacket potatoe, some kind of pasta etc and then by tea time I find I'm not hungry and generally eat for the sake of it because I've cooked a meal for the children & my partner.

I'd happily have a bigger meal lunch time then just snack on an evening.

MrsJBaptiste · 28/01/2020 20:55

Oh God, Crunchy Nut Cornflakes! If I had a box of them in the house, they would honestly only last a night or two... 😊

Glad to see it's not just me though!

Quite funny as I've just wrote that I'm eating toast! I had an apple for breakfast, a pub lunch with my mum at lunch time ( mini fish and chips ) and after the gym I just wasn't hungry enough ( or can be bothered ) but I've actually been looking forward to this as I've got some nice granary bread Grin

Beautiful3 · 28/01/2020 21:08

Same here. When my husband's working lates, I give the children theirs. By the time I'm sorted, it's too late to eat. Tonight I ate 3 pieces of shortbread instead of dinner.

Gilead · 28/01/2020 21:11

Lunch out today, so tonight half a cheese stottie and a bag of crisps.

MorrisZapp · 28/01/2020 21:14

Most nights tbh. Seems a massive faff for something I don't really want

squeekums · 28/01/2020 21:16

If i was allowed if live on plain pasta, toast or cereal.
Many times i snack as dinner as i just dont want a full meal.

butwhateverfor · 28/01/2020 21:16

Having cereal tonight. I just get tired of feeding things sometimes!

ThatThereWoman · 28/01/2020 21:18

If I'm not eating with the children, I don't usually bother to cook for myself, or I eat something really random.

Left to myself I wouldn't ever cook.
