Does anyone else’s child have HORRIBLE breath when they have a virus?!

Poor DD has a virus. Aches, headache, stuffy nose, very mild fever, also she always gets a little viral rash without fail which she has today.

Her breath is HORRENDOUS. She’s sleeping in bed with me (for comfort) and I’m slightly dreading getting in next to her in a couple of hours, it’s like a toxic wave!

Is this a ‘thing’ with viruses? It’s not a sign her sore throat may be a bacterial infection, is it? Sore throat doesn’t seem awful, she’s been fine on calpol, so I wasn’t thinking about going to the GP as all other signs point to virus.

She’s had dodgy breath once or twice before with viruses come to think of it but not as bad as this.

And she usually smells like a meadow Grin she has lovely clean teeth etc!!!

She’s 7

Anyone else’s child??!

Mine does. I always know when she's going to fall ill as she gets her ill breath.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 26/01/2020 20:35

My DD gets musty breath when she's ill. She's not ill often so when she gets it, I know she's gonna get ill.

SilverShins · 26/01/2020 20:35

Yes! My daughter's also 7 and often develops oral thrush when she's ill. Agh, the smell's atrocious!
Check your daughter's tongue for a white coating, if it's there, it's probably thrush.
Our doctor recommended a gel to dab on the tongue, clears it pretty quickly.
I can't remember the name offhand but you can google.
Good luck OP Smile

Tooth brushing may be impaired when they are unwell

Thanks everyone!!
We’ve done her teeth really well so I’m as certain as I can be it’s not that. Also it’s a really weird smell, not like bad breath from old food but a kind of horrible paint-stripper, metallic smell.
She has been saying her mouth is dry as it’s hard to swallow with the sore throat (though I don’t think her throat is that bad, she seems worse with aches/tiredness than actual pain tbh)
Oh well, good to know it’s not just us!!! Thank you all x

Hmm is she very thirsty? Metallic breath can be caused by ketones

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 20:47

Clymene, she’s drunk pretty well today actually though hasn’t eaten much, no real appetite. She has been a bit more thirsty than usual but I had put that down to sore throat.

Yes. My son is almost 2 and he gets a very sour, musty breath smell when he’s ill. I always know he’s coming down with something when I smell it.

stripeypillowcase · 26/01/2020 20:48

yep
like very ripe brie cheese

Bluntness100 · 26/01/2020 20:49

Op could she have tonsillitis and not a virus? Thr symptoms and bad breath are indicating she might well have.

My daughter had it, chronically and she was like this till they took them out.

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 20:49

Sour, yes, that’s exactly it!!! And not unlike stinky cheese too tbh... am weirdly glad this is a Thing!!!

SpeedofaSloth · 26/01/2020 20:49

Yes, when DD has a sore throat, or is about to develop one.

Bluntness100 · 26/01/2020 20:50

Sorry just seen the sore throat. Get her to a doctor, I suspect she's got tonsillitis.

IndieTara · 26/01/2020 20:51

Yes my DD does. It's one of the indicators of how Ill she is

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 20:51

Bluntness thank you!! I would guess unlikely as honestly her throat hasn’t been Bothering her that much, it seems very mild indeed. She’s complaining more of feeling tired and her arms and legs aching. I will keep an eye on the throat tho. Thank you x

Thanks so much everyone.

Bluntness100 · 26/01/2020 20:56

Op, sorry for being pushy, but being tired, feeling achey, having a fever, sore swallowing and throat, headache, coughing, bad breath etc are all symptoms of tonsillitis.

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 20:58

You’re not being pushy bluntness, I really appreciate your input!!
I will see if we can pop to the GP tomorrow. She’s definitely not going to school so hopefully we can get one of their on the day appointments.
I hugely appreciate the help x

Get her to a doctor, I suspect she's got tonsillitis.

tonsillitis can be either viral or bacterial. in either case most times it goes away on it's own. doesn't need a dr if it's mild. rest and fluids should be enough.

but do keep an eye on her if she's getting worse.

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 21:04

Thanks stripey. She’s rested all day and will stay off school tomorrow (bang goes my work day); sigh. I need to find better ways to build up her immunity, she gets EVERYTHING!!!

Yes, I can smell when DS is poorly.

Bitofnamechanging · 26/01/2020 21:06

My two boys are currently ill with fevers. Their breaths stink. Happens every time

Thislittlefinger · 26/01/2020 21:11

Yes this happens my kids and a day or two later the bathroom smells are pretty bad.

HepburnKNotA · 26/01/2020 21:15

Thislittlefinger oh you mean it upsets their tummies a bit too? Would make sense, DD definitely doesn’t have a gastric virus specifically but has definitely been a bit odd in the bowel movement department the last two days!!
Horrible virus, or whatever it is she’s got. Ugh. Bloody January!!!
