My house stinks of animals

FancyPants20 · 26/01/2020 19:48

This is not surprising as three animals live in it, but it still really fucking annoys me, unreasonably.
I don't want to get rid of my animals (two dogs and a cat) as, you know, i love the little buggers, I would just like them to be a bit more circumspect with their personal hygiene and housekeeping.

Other animal-havers...what, if anything, do you do to counteract the scent of animal in your homes? I have briefly considered Zoflora-ing them, but I don't think this would give me my desired result (having animals that are alive, andand having a house that doesn't stink).

Hi, I bath the dog every 3 weeks or so, have a Aldi no22 (smells lush) reed diffuser and use zoflora on floors and to damp wipe surfaces Smile

FancyPants20 · 26/01/2020 19:56

Is Zoflora not really bad for animals though?

Make sure the animals are not in the room when the zoflora is wet, you can also wipe afterwards with water too.

I have a big slobbery lab and 2 cats. We hoover daily, mop every other day, wipe down sofa and wash cushions once a week. Cat beds and dog bed covers get washed once a week. I bought a washing bag thing on amazon which stops the machine getting full of hairs.

Dog doesn’t get washed but we live by the sea so he goes for a swim most days which keeps him smelling nice.

caringcarer · 26/01/2020 20:07

Dogs go to groomers for bath every 2 week s as we got a bubble bundle for them for Xmas. 6 cats and and I don't think they smell. They toilet out doors in corner of garden. All animals fleas on last day of every month and wormed every other month. Cleaner sprays oust around and steam mops all floors twice each week and their bedding is washed weekly. In my experience people sometimes forget pet bedding.

FancyPants20 · 26/01/2020 20:11

Yes, tbh, I think it's the dog bedding that stinks the most. We don't wash it often enough because of the washing machine getting full of hairs' things.
@Mileymileymoomoo can you link me up to your washing bag thing please?

Following this ! My issue is I don't know if my house smelĺs and I'm paranoid. I have 1 indoor cat, keep litter trays spotless but still worry. Are there any apps that tell you if your house stinks Grin

MuthaFunka61 · 26/01/2020 20:40

Try sprinkling bi-carb on carpets and soft furnishings and leaving overnight and hoovering off in the morning.
Bi-carb's a natural deodorant.

cheeseismydownfall · 26/01/2020 21:16

What do you feed your dogs? Two families I know feed their dogs raw food only and neither the dogs, not their houses, smell doggy AT ALL - I wouldn't even know they had a dog, and I am very very sensitive to smell. Every other dog house I know absolutely reeks. Both of the raw-food feeders say that dog smell (or lack of it) is 100% diet related (I personally have no idea, I'm not a dog owner).

Mileymileymoomoo · 26/01/2020 21:19

@FancyPants20 this is the one I got but there’s loads on amazon

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01N0CHD7Z?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Christmaspug · 26/01/2020 21:28

I’ve 2 dogs
We removed all carpet downstairs, and replaced with tiles and underfloor heating .
Mainly because the kids were messy ,but solves the problem of dogs having an accident as well.
UnLess one of the dogs poos on the floor in the time between the underfloor heating switching on and me getting up ,in which case a lovely aroma of warm poo wafts upstairs

Whatdayisit2 · 26/01/2020 21:31

Feed them outside, pet food smells. Wash your dogs at least once a week and brush the cats (outside) daily- mine loved that. Hoover, sweep, mop thoroughly- get the hair out from behind radiators abs off skirting boards. I had two cats and was paranoid about pet smells.

jillandhersprite · 26/01/2020 21:33

Need to look at what is trapping and holding the smells. Worst is carpets and soft furnishings. No matter what you do to keep your pet clean and dry - those will just be absorbing the smells - can u switch to hard floors, wipe clean sofas?
Also given that majority of people have a dog or a cat does it really matter. It's probably a very small minority of people that notice the animal smells!!!!

BadEyeBri · 26/01/2020 21:44

Please don't bath your dogs weekly. You will ruin their skin. Do wash their beds weekly. Change litter trays completely at least every second day and solids removed as soon as possible. Hard floors and no dogs on the sofa help keep the doggy smell at bay.
TBH we have 3 big dogs and 7 cats and the joy they bring is irreplaceable. I don't give a flying shit if my house smells but I also have a uncontrolled Jo Malone habit.

Muminabun · 26/01/2020 21:56

Have hard floors, wash beds regularly, air out house daily, cover sofas and regularly wash covers, don’t let dogs upstairs on the carpets or beds ( apart from the tiny little old one with a superiority complex😁) I also wash the dogs about once a month in the shower. Give half your life up to constantly hoovering, sweeping and cleaning floors.

theoriginalmadambee · 26/01/2020 21:58

Before washing the bedding put on rubber gloves and stroke the hairs off. Put sheets or covers on the dogs favorite sleeping spots and wash the covers regularly too.

Bin not eaten wet food, it smells as bad as a litter tray.

Eloisedublin123 · 26/01/2020 22:02

Air the house as often as possible. Get a really good vacuum (we have a good one we got half price in the sales) and keep washing the bedding

DontCallMeShitley · 26/01/2020 22:14

Reed diffusers can burn pet skin badly. Re: Zoflora, anything that clouds in water is poisonous to pets.

A pet enzyme spray like Simple Solution removes some of the pet pong, as does bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar in water. I found that Simple Solution (large bottle rather than the small spray) removed the smell of dog from a much used vehicle purchased from an animal rescue, it took a bit of work but once it was gone it was gone.

I also used it in the carpet shampooer, no shampoo just a good dose of Simple Solution.

Oil from doggy coats is the problem, so they need a bath before they begin to pong.

UnaCorda · 26/01/2020 23:31

Bin not eaten wet food

My cat says she does not understand this phrase: "not eaten wet food".

(Also, she smells like biscuits.)

theoriginalmadambee · 26/01/2020 23:41

@UnaCorda
Tell your cat, I do apologize Smile. One of mine only eats the sauce and leaves the chunky bits, luckily my other cat is a 'wetfoodhoover™️' and gets soo disappointed if nothing is left.

But seriously, it stinks the house down if ever left Grin.

Jessie9323 · 27/01/2020 00:01

I have 4 cats and get a very fluffy bed, I Hoover it before I put it in the wash, we have a dyson pet vacuum attachment and it's great

SwansGlide · 27/01/2020 00:20

What exactly do you mean by the scent of animals?

I have 2 cats and a dog, and they and the house don't smell of anything. At all. They are clean, the house is clean. Confused.

Tillygetsit · 27/01/2020 01:39

The only bad smells from my 2 dogs is the elderly lurcher farting. Fabreeze is my friend.

TheDoctorDances · 27/01/2020 06:41

I raw feed. My dog still stinks. I think breed plays a big part, he's part lab. Every lab I've ever known stinks to high heaven. Love them dearly but they honk.

Dowser · 27/01/2020 09:44

I had three Persians and my house smelled fine.
Met dh who’s dog was very smelly..staffie
Awful greasy smell..I couldn’t stand it.
