Does anyone take pills to stop farting?

managedmis · 23/01/2020 20:22

I seem to be farting a lot recently. They stink! I eat a lot of beans, veg etc and don't want to change my diet to stop the farts.

I saw some pills today that apparently stop 'flatulence' but was too embarrassed to read the label as I was near to work and didn't want anyone seeing me.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Charcoal tablets? Did take them at some point years ago, not sure if they worked!

6demandingchildren · 23/01/2020 20:35

Following with great interest.

Wind settlers. They break the gas bubbles up inside you. I take them for IBS and they don’t completely cure the issue but definitely help quite a lot

Wind settlers? That's what they're called? I'll take a look

I know you said you don't want to change your diet, but I gave up bread & my killer farts stopped. Went cold turkey for about 3 months, now I can eat a small amount with no ill effects.

Might be worth a try if you don't want to take pills?

HavelockVetinari · 23/01/2020 20:52

Activated charcoal is your friend here, works like a dream!

HavelockVetinari · 23/01/2020 20:54

Wind settlers are anti-spasmodics for trapped wind - if your issue is trumping then activated charcoal is more appropriate

Groggy, I don't eat much bread at all, I'm trying to low carb! Homemade lentil and veg soup makes me fart like a maniac though! 💭

I'll try the charcoal then

Thanks!

I've never tried tablets, but have considered them a lot previously.

I'm low carbing at the minute (for health reasons rather than weight loss, although that's a pleasant side effect) and discovered that cutting out carbs has cut out my flatulence almost completely. The lentils in your soup would set me off again I think.

Let me know how you get on with the tablets if you try them. I'm thinking about continuing low carb for ever (for the health reasons, but the reduced farting is a massive incentive too), but it would be good to have something to help if I have a carby meal.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 23/01/2020 21:09

Charcoal tabs, windeze and peppermint tea

anon2000000000 · 23/01/2020 21:11

Need these for my husband.

slipperywhensparticus · 23/01/2020 21:14

Lentils are deadly! Buscapam helps but I've heard good things about shreddies underwear too it's supposed to stop the stench

RebelWithVerySharpClaws · 23/01/2020 21:31

I am a massive farter. I have asked my GP about it and she was just embarrassed and had nothing to offer at all. Charcoal has good reviews, but maybe only for the pong. Shreddies, I have a pair - hard to say if they work or not, but I have the panty kind, which would not keep in a stinker. But these days I don't worry too much about the whiff. If buying Shreddies again, I would try the boxer kind. Otherwise, avoid wheat, I find rye bread is better for the ole bum. Otherwise fart away, better in than out, and it only becomes a problem if we make it one. Our bums know best and if air wants to come out - just let it go.

Echobelly · 23/01/2020 21:33

I've also got really farty since hitting my 40s! Blush I went to the doctor about it about 18 months ago and I think sent off a blood test but never got round to picking up the results. Should probably try charcoal tablets or something as I'm beginning to feel sorry for people sitting hear me at work Shock

CatEnabler · 23/01/2020 21:36

Sounds like you have an intolerance?

CodenameVillanelle · 23/01/2020 21:36

Lentil and veg soup isn't very low carb!
I had the most settled tummy I'd ever had when I was low carb but there were no legumes allowed!

stayingontherail · 23/01/2020 21:37

With beans, make sure you rinse them really really well. That really helped reduce my bottyburps.

managedmis · 24/01/2020 00:15

Our bums know best and if air wants to come out just let it go.

Fair play but I work in an open-plan office, so trumping as and when is resolutely off limits!

I should I am lower carbing - lentils, beans etc allowed, no pies and chips really.

May well be an intolerance though, probably to cabbage 🤔

Gosh you can't beat trumping though when you really need to let one out. I always have to hold them in at family doos of meetings. It's painful.

Cutting down on wheat helped me, but give me pulses I'm Mrs methane.

CilantroChili · 24/01/2020 00:43

Cabbage is notoriously bad for farts. Any of the brassica (sp?) family I remember this from my breastfeeding days as the wind-making can transfer to the baby apparently

Fieldofgreycorn · 24/01/2020 00:55

I’m veggie and trump constantly. Price we pay for a healthy diet.

Mine mostly don’t smell at all, so I do wonder if maybe I swallow a lot of air when I eat.
