What diagnosis should my son have?

My son is turning 5 soon, started reception in September and has picked up reading and writing really well. Adapted well to the school routine and overall enjoys school.

His speech has always been the issue, he didn't have any words until 2.5 and then since then he's been doing well and now talks in sentences and can communicate his needs and other things quite well however he's not at the level of his peers as in when I ask him "what did you do at school today?" he isn't able to communicate that to me.

When he was a toddler we worried it was autism and had him assessed privately by a SALT, occupational therapist and one of the top developmental paeds and they all said not in their opinion.

He doesn't have any behavior issues, is as easy going as a 4 year old can be, loves being around people and his peers, picks up new activities really well (he started swimming classes a few weeks ago and is doing realy well).

From what I can gather he doesn't meet the 2/3 criteria for an autism diagnosis but obviously I'm not an expert. Would this be a language delay only? If so what help should we get him? SALT? Does anyone have a child with language/communication delay? Did they ever overcome it?

Sorry for the long post, I just want to help my son in the best way possible.

What do you mean when you say he isn’t able to communicate with you.

On the one hand I never really got anything out of Ds on what he did in school.

OTOH I couldn’t tell my mother what I did in school because words would escape me.

I have got a little better over the years but only because I had a trick where I substituted any word for the one I want then just kept saying words until I got to the right one.

I am dyslexic (being able to read and write doesn’t mean you aren’t dyslexic) and also most likely ADHD
