Stomach bug after hospital stay

Dp has just been discharged after a 3 night stay in hospital. Discharged yesterday lunchtime.

While in hospital he had a runny stool sample which they tested but never said anything about so assumed fine.

Hes been up for the last few hours with bad diarrhoea and nausea.

However to complicate things the reason for his hospital stay was abdominal pain and vomitting, for a different reason. Hes assuring me that this is different to before, and it feels like a bug.

My worry is that after his hospital stay he might struggle to cope with this without more medical help. Hes saying just now he doesnt want me to phone for help, and doesnt want to go to the hospital because he is likely contagious.

What to do for the best?? Let it pass at home or get help now?

Maybe ring the ward for advice. He doesn’t have to act on the advice but at least he will have it.

I wouldn't be sure which ward to phone.... He soent first night on short stay ward, then moved to gastro ward for second night (he liked this one) and then moved to a different hospital gastro ward the third night. He really didnt like the second hospital, was old and didnt feel very clean.

Would it be the last ward i would need to phone or could i phone the gastro ward of the first hospital?

Maybe phone the one where he had the stool sample.

That was the ward that he was happier on so will do that if he doesnt improve. Is that an ok thing to do to just phone the ward directly? Not sure if thats a bit cheeky

I don't think it's cheeky. If he has developed a virus he may have been contagious in there and you are just informing them however could they check his notes to see whether there was anything in his stool sample. Chances are they won't tell you anything though (patient confidentiality). Worth a try though.

If he phoned himself would they talk to him or would they need to verify that its him?

Good point though, im not his next of kin so probably wouldnt be able to tell me anything.

The concern is that he was vomitting so much last time he was very dehydrated and caused an acute kidney infection. So any more vomitting is not good. I dont know how long before getting medical help because of this. I feel it should be shorter than normal, but i dont know. Dp is reluctant to go back to hospital after bad experience in the last ward.

I can understand his reluctance but if his recent illness was to do with kidneys he won't do himself any favours by getting dehydrated. I do think you need medical advice from someone though. If not the ward how about 111? They will want to speak to him too but you can start the process by calling them.

I wouldn’t ring the ward (I’m a nurse), they probably won’t have his notes any more, you might not get anyone who knows him. You’re better off calling 111 for advice even though you’ll have to run through it all again. In the mean time, encourage him to have Oral fluids, Ice lollies can help.

Hes settled a bit now, drinking still vimto which is staying down, dont know if the sugar is helping? Hes sleeping now so will leave it and hope that its just the slow recovery from his original illness. Mornings are always the worst. Will call 111 if it flares up again though, i agree that he doesnt want to take chances with his kidney infection.

Phone your GP or 111. The ward can't do anything. He isn't a patient anymore.

111 told us to go back to a and e so we are back and waiting. Dp seems very down and defeated that we are back here. Think hes struggling mentally with it now. Hopefuly nearly there...
