Don't know the area well, but I know that there's loads of chain places around there. Can anyone recommend something different nearby, y'know, a cafe/tearoom that will do posh afternoon tea?

TIA!

Well, it might depend on the day and it might not be as 'posh' as you wanted, but the County Hall Marriott is great for the view of the Thames and the bridge if they are serving tea in the Library. If it is in the restaurant, not so scenic. Just check where they will be serving. And book a table near the windows.

I was going to suggest the cafe at the Methodist Hall. Not posh but it is very close to Parliament

You could walk along the river to Skylon at the Southbank Centre (or one stop on the tube or the river bus). It has great views.

It's a treat for DD and her friends, so I wanted to make it special Wink

Well, the Marriott can be as special as you like but just that it is not silver service or the Ritz.

There is a cafe inside the Parliament grounds I think, although I haven't been in there and suspect it doesn't do nice afternoon tea. The National Gallery is on Trafalgar Sq. at the end of Whitehall which is a quick walk. I seem to remember they have a fancy cafe/restaurant in there alongside the more run of the mill cafe.

Saturdaynightsalright is right, you can book afternoon tea at the Houses of Parliament.
