Friend has bought me a perfume that I don't like. What to do?

Birthday last week. She bought me a bottle of Jo Malone cologne and I opened it next day, so didn't try it in front of her. I knew it wasn't for me and DH complained and asked me to wash it off. So, do I tell her I love it and have her wonder why I never wear it? Offer it back to her? It can't be exchanged because there's some missing now.

Don't tell her you love it-she might buy it again. Just apologise and offer it to her. If she doesn't want it, see if a women's refuge would like it, to cheer someone up.

How will she know you never wear it? Just keep it, maybe occasionally spray a bit on your coat or something if you’re meeting her but you wouldn’t need to every time - Emory the bottle out a tad as needs be. I doubt she’s going to be coming up and giving you a sniff! Would she likely notice if you were wearing a different one? I probably wouldn’t!

Fairylea · 16/01/2020 17:03

Just spray it occasionally when you meet her. And never wear it otherwise. She probably won’t even realise!

I'd get rid, she won't know.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 16/01/2020 17:04

Honestly? Wear/use it on your clothes a couple of times, then fade it out till she forgets about it.

Nanasueathome · 16/01/2020 17:08

Which Jo Malone perfume is it?

74NewStreet · 16/01/2020 17:10

Your dh complained and asked you to wash it off?

MirandaGoshawk · 16/01/2020 17:12

I don't want to offend her. 74New street - it's very strong and distinctive.

No idea why it's posted twice! It's called Blackberry & Bay. I wear citrussy scents and I really don't like this one.

Did you spray it onto your skin or in the air and walk into it?

WorraLiberty · 16/01/2020 17:14

How will she know you never wear it? Confused

MrBobLobLaw · 16/01/2020 17:15

I'll have it OP! Happy to pay the P&P.

HironsBirons · 16/01/2020 17:15

The sales assistant in Jo Malone told me used perfume could be returned if you tried it and didn’t like it. I think they obviously mean if you’ve been reasonable and only used one or two sprays!

MrBobLobLaw · 16/01/2020 17:16

And also agree that she'll never know you don't wear it.
My friend bought me a top which I like and do wear, but come to think of it she's probably never seen me wear it. She's never mentioned it though !

MirandaGoshawk · 16/01/2020 17:17

Yes, DH hated it too, but he is sensitive a fusspot about smells.

SayitBeit · 16/01/2020 17:17

I think you could try and take it back like PP said, they will know you have only tried it once and will find you one that you like.

Was it from a department store?

BonfireStarter · 16/01/2020 17:18

I would give it to someone else who doesnt know her (mum, sister etc) for free. Hopefully she wont buy again but if she does you know not to open it next time!

MirandaGoshawk · 16/01/2020 17:18

I sprayed it on my wrist. It is obviously good quality - hard to get rid of by washing off!

Musmerian · 16/01/2020 17:19

I’d buy it if you put it on eBay! I love it and have just finished my bottle. The big ones cost £100 so it’s pricey.

Paperyfish · 16/01/2020 17:19

I sold a lightly used bottle of jo Malone on ebay. Lime basil and mandarin. I just don’t like zesty sorts of smells. Got a decent amount for it!

MirandaGoshawk · 16/01/2020 17:19

I'm pretty sure that I know which department store she would have got it from (her Dd works there and she gets a discount). But I haven't got a receipt.

74NewStreet · 16/01/2020 17:20

I doubt they’ll exchange opened perfume, tbh.

MirandaGoshawk · 16/01/2020 17:20

Paperyfish - Shock!

EachandEveryone · 16/01/2020 17:23

They will let you swap it for a citrus one I bet. Ive taken foumdation back before no problem.
