What pets have you had and which do you think are best?

I've had cats, budgie, parrots, hamster, dog, snake, beardie, chickens, fish and guinea pigs.

By far my favourites have been the guinea pigs. So easy to take care of and very affectionate, funny pets.

My least favourite was the bearded dragon. Absolute arsehole to look after (don't know why they are marketed as a starter reptile?! Snakes are much easier) expensive, fussy and quick to get poorly.

I don't even count the dog as a pet any more, he's more like an extra child!

Interested to know what others think

Also had bearded dragons. Snakes. Corn and pastel boa. Chickens. Cats. Dogs. Rabbits. G pigs. Hamster. Rats. And a 6 foot bloody iguana.
Currently have 4 x ddogs, 2 dcats, 2 drabbits and a snake.

Dreamersandwishers · 13/01/2020 16:53

Dogs, guinea pigs & fish. Loved them all, but dogs are definitely my favourites - as you say they are more like children than pets, and I am fairly sure they think so too.

Whynosnowyet · 13/01/2020 16:53

Fab were the chickens. Worst the iguana as it bit me. Wasn't pleasant.

Cats, gerbils, rats, chickens, dogs.

Chickens are the singly most endearing and we will eventually move again and get more.

But current puppy... daft as a brush.

guffaux · 13/01/2020 16:58

dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbit. guineapig, fish- cant choose a favourite but seriously loved the rabbit, and one of the dogs was my soulmate

Biochemistree · 13/01/2020 16:58

Dog is def my youngest son... we've had guineas and I loved them (which was good as I was inevitably the one cleaning them out and feeding them!) loved the way the squeaked when they heard you coming and great for getting rid of veg bits. Hamsters - had one nice Syrian, two not so nice, and one Russian which didn't live long. And two rats which got rehomed really quickly as couldn't stand them!

Nottobesoldseparately · 13/01/2020 17:03

Dogs and goldfish.

Each has their own merits, but you can't take a goldfish to the pub for a pint so the dog will always be my favourite.

If I had space, I'd have a professionally looked after aquarium, chickens and a couple of pigs. I love pigs, think they are beautiful.

Biochemistree · 13/01/2020 17:03

I almost got a chameleon once. They are amazing but it was after I had the bearded dragon and I didn't fancy all the faff. Ended up with crickets all over my house with the beardie. Springy little bastards. No more live feeding ever in this house!

Cats, rabbits, hamsters, fish, dogs between dp and me

Cats all the way! Our current cat is definitely our child

MrsT1405 · 13/01/2020 17:07

I've had cats, dog, hamsters, g pigs, chinchilla, goats, ducks, hens, rats. I hated the hamster . It bit me, escaped all the time and peed over the edge of its enormous cage and run. I loved my goats and showed them all over the north of England. I'd love a cat now but we holiday too much.

gamerwidow · 13/01/2020 17:08

Cats, dogs, guinea pigs, budgies and geckos.

Currently have two cats and two guinea pigs. The cats are the best but the guinea pigs are lovely too such affectionate easy pets.

I'd never have a dog again.

leckford · 13/01/2020 17:09

Horses, dogs and guinea pigs in that order. Only have my fab horse and dog currently

Babdoc · 13/01/2020 17:16

I’m a 100% cat person- I’ve always had a rescue cat, and find them the best company and least trouble of any animal. Particularly as I worked full time until my retirement, so a cat was the only animal which didn’t mind being solitary at home during the day, and was free to come and go via the cat flap.
I could never have forced an animal to live in a cage, or left a social pack animal like a dog home alone - I couldn’t have lived with the guilt.

Winkywoop · 13/01/2020 17:19

Cats
Dogs
Rabbits

In that order.

NameNumber5 · 13/01/2020 17:22

In order of preference:

Horse
Dog
Guinea pigs
Chickens

ParanoidGynodroid · 13/01/2020 17:23

I’ve had various cats, a dog, a snake, fish, chickens and guinea pigs.

I think I favour cats and dogs equally. My dog is so beautiful and affectionate, and keeps me fit. My current cat is bonkers and also affectionate. I love how cats can come and go and be quite independent

Witchend · 13/01/2020 17:24

Budgies. We've just given them a bird bath for the first time and they're being hilarious.
The bravest is hopping in, squeaking and dashing out.
The nervous one is standing on the side, dipping his beak in, then climbing up to look at it from a different angle and getting cross because his tail is then in the water.
The girl is standing there shaking her head and looking superior when they squeak.
Every now and then she comes close and knocks the nervous one in the water, then retreats to groom herself in a "I am so innocent" way.

Between that they're competing over a peg. There are three identical pegs on the floor. They all want the same one, and will protect it against the others. Or at any rate the boys will protect it against the other boy. When the girl hops up, she just stands there. If she was human she'd be folding her arms and raising an eyebrow. The boys flee when they notice her.

There's also competition about the positioning of one of the feed trays. The girl thinks it should be about 2" left of where one of the boys thinks. So they change it when they go past. Then they can't resist pointing it out. Repeat. Grin

At other times the brave one likes to sit on the back of my chair, or ds' shoulder.
The nervous one likes to fly round in circles round the room, but not land too close unless I have a treat.

And the two old men, just like to eat and sleep. And occasionally pass comment on the antics of the younger ones.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/01/2020 17:24

I've owned, lived with and looked after a range of animals from pigs to gerbils, and dogs win every time.

LilMrsS · 13/01/2020 17:25

I've had degus , lovely small pets like mini chinchillas.. easy to maintain great personality's and live upto 6-10yo so well worth it. My daughter loves them

PorpentinaScamander · 13/01/2020 17:26

Fish, pretty to look at but died so easily.

Hamsters. Either total arsehole or absolutely adorable. Our nicest ever one used to sleep in my cleavage. In fact she curled up in there when she was dying and I couldn't bring myself to move her so she stayed there until the end.

Mice. Cute and loved being handled but poo everywhere.

Rats. Other than the one evil bastard they were all lovely. High on my list of favourites.

Guineas. Love them. Although the last one I had was an attention seeker. He wouldn't stop squeaking when I came home until I made a fuss of him. Same if the phone rang. Regular callers used to say "hi Tina and say hi to Cubby for me" Grin

Rabbits. Mine always die for some reason Confused

Turtles. Super easy to look after. Cute looking but boring after a while. They don't do a lot.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 13/01/2020 17:27

Cats, rabbits, hamsters, snakes.

I loved the cats and I'd have one now if I lived somewhere suitable, but I don't think it's fair to have them as house pets.

I hated the rabbit and the hamsters. Bitey, kicky little shits. I wouldn't have wished harm on any of them but I wasn't sorry when they died - I should add that they belonged to a housemate, not me, so I wasn't responsible for loving them!

The snakes are brilliant, my favourite by a long way. They all have such different personalities. I've really laid back friendly ones, big soft cuddly ones, and one hissy dramatic one who thought he was a cobra but was great with children. I recommend them to anyone.

Pipandmum · 13/01/2020 17:37

Guinea pig, cats, dogs, budgies, fish, rabbits, bearded dragon.
Best are cats - affectionate and easy to look after.
Worst was the dragon- expensive kit, expensive food and it really didn't do much.
Currently have two dogs and two rabbits and a fish. Dogs are great except it is pouring out right now and they need a walk! Plus kennel costs.
Rabbits are fine they live outside and can usually get someone to come feed them when we go away.
Fish lacks a certain amount of personality and can't claim he's very affectionate. Or even that it's a he.

LER83 · 13/01/2020 17:54

I've had cats, rabbit, guinea pigs, hamsters, budgies and fish. Favourite definitely cats, would have a house full if I could! Worst has to be fish, I just can not keep them alive! I do like rabbits/guinea pigs/ hamsters but can not stand cleaning cages out! Especially when they are outside in the winter!!

Itstheprinciple · 13/01/2020 18:22

Cats, rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, fish, hamster.

Love cats the very very best!
