No idea where to start. No mortgage to worry about but would like lump sum if something happened, funeral costs covered, and maybe income protection? Critical illness?

Don't want to get fleeced! Any ideas what's best to ask for before I get sold everything!? lol

You could use an IFA who doesn’t work on commission. That’s what we did and felt reassured that they were therefore working for us.

Think about what risks you're trying to cover - eg dependents, your outgoings if you weren't able to work, cost of modifying your home etc

Then think about what assets you have which would cover part of it (eg x months earnings in savings, assets which would cover funeral costs etc).

Then look at insurance to cover the difference!

A good starting point is the website moneysavingexpert. It also suggests some routes to obtaining quotes.

Other things to think about are, given you've no mortgage, whether you have death in service benefit from your current employer and if so, whether you really need life insurance on top of that (whilst you're employed there).

I'd also look at the pay out rate for any insurance company you choose and look carefully at what's excluded.
Bear in mind critical illness insurance isn't exactly watertight and may not pay out.
