Can it be a chest infection with no mucus?

Sorry to ask for an internet diagnosis, but I am a bit confused by my symptoms. I started feeling a bit unwell Fri night, since then it's gradually developed until now I have a slight sore throat (at the back of my throat only, around my soft palate, no difficulty swallowing), and a chesty sounding cough, which isn't productive. No temperature, although I've been feeling a bit flushed. No congestion/snotty or blocked nose, no difficulty breathing, but my chest has been feeling tight/sore since yesterday, before the cough started. I originally thought it was going to turn into a cold, but it seems to have settled in to my chest instead. However any list of chest infection symptoms includes coughing up mucus, which I don't have. Any thoughts? Nothing else it could be that I haven't thought of?

Sounds like what I had over new year. It took a week to clear and I developed a very annoying cough and felt quite knackered.

I've had something similar since Friday but with a high temp. I'm seeing the doctor today. Initial viral illness was late December but then it came back with a temperature.

Ihatethecold, did it ever get worse than just annoying? I have something important happening at work tomorrow which I really don't want to miss. I feel fine in myself at the moment, just hoping that doesn't change.

Tunselette, hope you feel better soon

Yeah, the mucus will just be sitting in your lungs so you can't see it.

Even though I am breathing freely and deeply?

The cough was really unpleasant especially at night.
My GP friend said I sounded like I needed antibiotics but it did start to improve after a week.
Completely lost my voice for 2 days but weirdly didn’t need to blow my nose once.

Sounds like what I had. Felt flu like for a couple of days and then it was just a cough. It lasted for weeks! My breathing was fine as well. After a few weeks there was mucus and it started to clear.
Sounds like a viral cough which unfortunately just has to run its course.

I've got something similar at the moment. Felt a bit off on Thursday, by Friday the cough had started. Very dry, sore, scratchy throat (like someone's been at it with sandpaper!) and a bit weary. Otherwise functioning. I've got a slightly drippy nose as of this morning though so I think it's just this year's winter virus thing.

I think so. I had one without a cough or mucus a few years ago. I was just really poorly.

It could easily be an infection either bacterial or viral. Without the cough it just indicates that either your cough isn’t effective or at the moment the infected material is not moving.
