Hot Bovril is excellent and I plan on drinking more of it.

In the afternoons I think. In the winter.

I tried hot marmite and it was nice but not as nice as hot bovril.

I asked in Pret today if they still did bone broth and the guy laughed at me and said they hadn’t done it for at least a year. I said I’ll keep asking til they bring it back! I love it!

managedmis · 10/01/2020 16:58

Well, why not, goddammit!

gatekeeper · 10/01/2020 17:00

bovril is lovely- I remember my dad putting crumbled up cream crackers in mine so they floated on top- champion stuff

Pebble21uk · 10/01/2020 17:02

Very timely - I've had flu over Christmas and New Year and have been drinking hot Marmite, but said to my partner it just doesn't cut it like hot Bovril used to... so that went on the shopping list and I bought my first jar of Bovril in about 20 years last week! So please can I joing the club too.

HoneysuckleSpeck · 10/01/2020 17:04

@AwdBovril - your username makes me think of the James Herriot books 😁

Davros · 10/01/2020 17:58

Alcalavicci, lovely story. Was he called
J R Hartley by any chance?
Those vending machines at the swimming pool used to do really watery hot chocolate too that I got a taste for

AwdBovril · 10/01/2020 18:16

@HoneysuckleSpeck I did think of going with ShittinAwdBovril, but it didn't sound quite as genteel... Grin

TheNoodlesIncident · 10/01/2020 21:51

AwdBovril - ah, okay, that would make a difference. I was meaning in general but fair enough, that's crap for you Sad

I remember one manufacturer used to make Bovril flavoured crisps, they were lovely. Shame you can't get them now.

spagbog5 · 10/01/2020 22:15

We all have bovril on toast for breakfast every morning-absolute food of the gods !!

LemonRedwood · 10/01/2020 22:21

My grandmother used to give hot bovril to my sister when she had a nosebleed. I never suffered nosebleeds so was never treated to bovril Sad

Bovril is genuinely the food of the gods. Fabulous as a hot drink, in gravy, in a sandwich (butter essential), on toast, on crumpets and, my favourite, on scotch pancakes 😋

breadfortea · 10/01/2020 22:35

bovril and butter on toast is delicious.

squeakyheart · 10/01/2020 22:41

Damn I want some bovril now.

HoneysuckleSpeck · 10/01/2020 23:00

ShittinAwdBovril 😂😂😂😂🤷‍♀️

HoneysuckleSpeck · 10/01/2020 23:01

..... without the 🤷‍♀️

AlCalavicci · 11/01/2020 04:55

@Davros
Grin No but that would of been very fitting.
The hot chocolate out of them vending machines was vile , If it had run out of bovril we both used to have the chicken soup instead .

MandalaYogaTapestry · 11/01/2020 07:07

How do you make the hot bovril drink? That's the first time I hear about it and very interested!

sickandtiredofsick · 11/01/2020 07:14

Is it like gravy ?

Beautyoftheirdreams · 11/01/2020 07:20

My DP grew up on bovril sandwiches, I'd never tried it before meeting him. Now I have bovril on toast every morning, particularly good for my anaemic toddler.
My favourite combination is cold toast spread with soft cheese, bovril and smashed avocado. I'm going to have to have that for breakfast now!

VanillaSugarr · 11/01/2020 07:25

How do you make it? Half a teaspoon in a mug of hot water. Don’t drink it when it’s too hot as scalding your throat can cause cancer (a relative who is an ENT surgeon told me this). Adjust to taste. The Sherry adds sweetness: sherries consommé used to be a staple on the dinner party circuit in the 70s.

My stepfather used to drink hot bovril with his lunch. Ahhhh, nostalgia!

Is Bovril 100% vegetarian now?

BigChocFrenzy · 11/01/2020 08:20

Walker's Marmite crisps are fab - and still available

LemonRedwood · 11/01/2020 09:31

Is Bovril 100% vegetarian now?

No, because it contains beef stock

LemonRedwood · 11/01/2020 09:32

Another bold fail from me 🤦🏼‍♀️

AwdBovril · 11/01/2020 19:57

@ScribblyGum it's from a James Herriot book - they were the first properly grownup books I read & loved. "Awd" is Yorkshire dialect for old, I think.

awd bovril&f=false book extract

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/01/2020 20:40

I loved those books. They're still on the shelf in my old bedroom at my parents house from me reading them in the 80s.
