I'm playing Simulacra 1 and get to the bit where it asks for your full name. My surname's hyphenated. I type it in, it says: "That can't be a real name." WTAF??!! Er, it is. Xmas ConfusedXmas Grin

I have a hyphen in my name and some websites (including a bloody bank once) just won't accept it so I normally remove it to see if it works.

That's what I ended up doing. I just thought it was hilarious that my name couldn't be a real name! DS 8 said it was "hurtful" when I told him (he's got his dad's surname and no hyphen). I reassured him that I wasn't hurt, just amused.

Can’t remember where I read it but there was an article recently about how people were declined when trying to register on websites and were banned from things like Uber Eats because of “fake”, “rude” surnames (Cockburn for example).

It's crazy. Fucking algorithms!

A friend of mine back in uni was mononymous! The troubles she encountered throughout the years pfft.

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 09/01/2020 14:40

How did she not have the usual given name and family name? Sorry, just curious.

She's Javanese. I think she said mononyms are common there, IIRC.

In our area 5 digit phone numbers are quite common. They're often refused on forms as incomplete.
